161st Annual Open Exhibition

Call for entries now open

 
 
For immediate release: 25 July 2013
 
The Royal West of England Academy holds an annual open exhibition, now in its 161st year. As the name suggests, anyone can enter their work for this mixed discipline show. A selection panel assesses every entry and last year 541 works by 351 artists made it into the final exhibition. All work is for sale, and the exhibition attracts art-lovers and art-buyers from far and wide.
 
Submissions are welcome from unknown, emerging and established artists, including RWA Academicians, and can include painting, drawing, printmaking, photography, sculpture, architecture and other media. Call for Entries opened on 15 July and close on 13 September 2013.
 
Pre-selection takes place online, after which successful artists will need to bring their work to the RWA for final selection in early November. Work can be collected from designated venues in London, Birmingham, Exeter and Penzance.

Deadline for entries is 5pm, 13 September 2013.

The Selection Panel
 
The selection panel has traditionally included artists, art dealers, curators and critics. This year the panel includes:
 
Dr Janette Kerr PRWA, David Inshaw RWA, Stephen Jacobson RWA, Rachael Nee RWA, Chris Dunseath RWA, Invited Artist Aisling Hedgecock and guest selector to be announced shortly.

Invited Artist - Aisling Hedgecock
 
This year our invited artist is The Independent's Outstanding Young Artist of the Year, Talent 2007, Aisling Hedgecock. Hedgecock was born in born in Donegal, Republic of Ireland, 1979, and moved to the United Kingdom in 1986. After completing an honours degree in Fine Art, Sculpture at Wimbledon School of Art, London in 2001, she gained a place on the Fine Art, Sculpture MA at the Royal College of Art, London in 2004. After the 2yr post-graduate degree Hedgecock was awarded the Sainsbury Scholarship in Drawing and Sculpture at The British School at Rome, living and working in Italy until 2008. Most recent solo exhibitions include We Are Stardust at Akershus Kunstsenter, Olso, The Third Stellation, at Galerie Gabriel Rolt, in Amsterdam. Group shows at Angus-Hughes, Cell and The Courtauld Institute of Art, London, and Galerie Schuster, Berlin. Her work is held in major collections in Europe. Hedgecock is currently based in London. Hedgecock also joins us on this year's selection panel.
 
Prizes
 
The Annual Open Exhibition provides an excellent opportunity for artists to sell their work and for it to be seen by thousands of visitors. A number of exciting prizes are awarded to selected works, as well.

£300 pounds given by the University of the West of England for distinctive practice in drawing.
 
Consumer Intelligence Watercolour Prize
First Prize: £250 cash
Second Prize: £150 cash
 
Redcliffe Press Photography Award

About the RWA
The RWA has eight galleries within the 19th century building. The five upstairs galleries – Sharples, Winterstoke, Stancomb-Wills, Methuen, and Milner - host the main exhibition/s, alongside the Bristol Drawing School studio. Downstairs is the Fedden Gallery and a newly completed gallery space. All gallery spaces are available for private hire for special events, such as weddings and parties, conferences and meetings. The Royal West of England Academy (RWA) is one of only five Royal academies of art in the UK. It is a registered charity which has been self-supporting for over 150 years and possesses an outstanding Grade II* listed building, galleries and permanent fine art collection. The RWA has HM Queen Elizabeth II as its patron and HRH The Prince of Wales is an honorary academician.
 
The RWA is an established venue for the fine arts and embraces an artistic awareness of the widest nature. The exhibition programme provides a showcase for one-person and mixed exhibitions in a variety of media, which attract large numbers of visitors nationwide. The Academy is situated in the academic heart of Bristol at the Clifton Triangle, where Queens Road meets Whiteladies Road, opposite the Victoria Rooms.
