Area Teens Design Green Space for Herkimer Apartments/Celebration and presentation of designs to take place on August 8th
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Urban Institute for Contemporary Art’s (UICA) Summer ArtWorks Program will celebrate the accomplishments of 20 area teens who have spent the last six weeks creating designs for functional sculpture to be installed in the courtyard of the currently under construction Herkimer Apartments. The student’s ideas and designs will be on display at the ArtWorks Summer Celebration at UICA on August 8th at 4:30PM, with a presentation in UICA’s theatre at 5:30PM. Opening in late fall, the newly renovated Herkimer Apartments, owned by Dwelling Place, will feature 122 one bedroom apartments.
Led by artist Corey VanderZwaag, the students have worked closely with Dwelling Place, the building architect, and representatives from the Avenue for the Arts to create designs that activate and enhance the courtyard green space that will be accessible to future residents. By working with a local creative professional, conducting surveys of the client’s needs, and creating small-scale examples of potential pieces students learned about the different stages of the creative process.
Dwelling Place and UICA's ArtWorks Program are thrilled to be working together once more. Last year’s ArtWorks mural project, also along S. Division, will join this year’s project not only as part of a larger effort to revitalize the Heartside neighborhood, but also as a lasting piece that will positively impact the experience of residents and visitors.
UICA’s ArtWorks Program is a free program for teens, ages 14-19, who are interested in exploring their creative talents and a future as a professional artist or designer. The program has received the National Arts and Humanities Youth Program Award, the nation’s highest honor for after school programs. Dwelling Place improves the lives of people by creating quality affordable housing, providing essential support services and serving as a catalyst for neighborhood revitalization.
