  • Artists Describing Their Art:

Dana Zivanovits - Dana Zivanovits was born in 1958 in Columbus, Ohio and received his art training from the Columbus College of Art and Design (1978 to 1982). After art school, he went abroad for a year and studied the art of the old masters in London, Paris, Madrid, Rome and Venice. Returning to his studio in Columbus to develop these influences into a new body of work, he then traveled to Mexico and studied the sculpture and painting of that country for an extended period. The unique and vivid colors of Palenque and Vera Cruz intensified his palette. After a period in Ohio, he then moved to Venice Beach, California where the brilliant light of the region reinforced his desire to capture effects of sunlight and atmosphere. Returning to Ohio in 1995, he has continued to paint themes deriving inspiration form sources such as world mythology, classic and B-grade cinema, literature and dreams. However his primary inspiration is direct observation from nature, versus an approach based in art theories or cultural critique. Dana has been widely represented by galleries and exhibition projects including Julie Rico and Mega Boom in Los Angeles, the Venice Art Detour, Around the Coyote Festival in Chicago ...

Christa Skoff Oglan - The muse, the madonna and the goddess captured in an endless dream is a recurrent theme of the figurative paintings. I strive to provide a feeling of mystery and opulence that act as points of departure into personal inward journeys for the viewer. ...

Patrick Sean Kelley - Behind the Art There is nothing more intimidating than standing in front of a blank canvas and wondering what it will become. There is also nothing more exhilarating. As I begin to apply paint to canvas I find my work seems to be in continuous motion. Always changing. Always progressing. Much like the oil paints that actually embody my visions. I am influenced by many places, things, people and of course, many artists. My latest work is changing yet again. The palette has become softer more jewel toned and the subjects more somber. They speak to me as I paint each stroke awaiting life on the canvas. I am clearly influenced by some of the more modern masters like, Klimpt, Kandinsky, Mirot, Caldwell and as always, Picasso. The art is Inspired by the subject. By a woman's beauty as it is seen and felt both internally and externally. The images in my vision actually seem to mask their true identities as they glance out at the viewer exuding an air of aloofness and mystique. Each stroke is painstakingly smoothed and controlled to create subtle dimensions and color that create the mysterious creatures that appear to come to life on ...

Terry Matarelli - My life is all about process. It's the getting there that interests me. My art is similar in that I like the process of making something from nothing. I've spent years landscaping and building a cabin in the woods, as well as doing artwork, and I love taking a bare piece of nothingness and making it something, walk away and don't look back. I strive for a nice finished product, but it's the getting there that keeps me going. I'm not interested in pretty. Be real. Painting is paint on a surface. Any materials, for that matter, have their own essential being, and bring that spirit to the work. I look for that material to speak to me, say something to the viewer, and say whatever it wants. My work is mostly figure ground relationships. I've been drawn to the figure all my life. I'm interested in the drama of life and living, and the endless possibilities of the interaction or isolation we encounter. I'm not looking to represent surface reality, but rather emotional or spiritual reality. I want to get under the skin and see what's going on. I like...

Monica Malbeck - I was born and raised in Romania, attending art school there. I graduated in 1974 from a highly successful art pilot program at age 18. Where I was offered exposure to all facets of art from visual communications to industrial design. This was followed by a successful career in fashion design with clients throughout Europe, U.S., and Japan. In 1990 I moved to the United States, and in 1996 I was introduced to digital media falling in love instantly with its versatility. I have been exploring digital design since then, trying to mix digital color and the illusions of texture and shape to capture fleeting, momentary thoughts and my feelings. My style varies depending on the subject being captured, as I always try to let the subject dictate the style rather than try to impose a repetitive style format. I have retired to Hawaii very early from a career as a fashion consultant, and decided to focus on art. My very first submission of my artwork to an international competition in Italy, was chosen among the finalists. I am a self-taught digital artist, and I like to explore a broad range of subjects. In my gallery you will...

Luccia Lignan - Luccia Lignan , structures the shapes with rich modellings of color. Before undertaking any work, she thinks instinctively for days and weeks, creating established rules in her imagination. An order, balance, and audacity allow her canvas to have the sweetness of the color that flow, with great expressivity, of course, properly orchestrated. Her nudes talk to us about sensuality. Her women are sensitive and relaxed, they are grateful to be alive, and their gratitude is shown in their body language. The Portrait, The Still-Life, and The Landscape form the parts of her production, demonstrating her pictorial discipline in The International Contemporary Art Scene. Also in splendid abstractions her mind sees a universe governed by textures and harmonic colors that stimulate the spectator; canvas full of colours, put in our face like a fountain of pure pleasure. All her nudes encompass an air of innocence, despite being very conscious of their charms. Whether they are individual figures or compositions, they take part in design for theatrical sceneries and murals. ...

Leslie Marcus - Born and raised in New York, Leslie Marcus maintains her cutting edge: continually taking her artwork to greater heights with passion and sensitivity. After receiving a B.F.A from The Academy of Art College in S.F. CA., Marcus immersed herself in the Fashion World of Los Angeles, creating exclusive, original & exotic Textile Designs for Apparel & Home Furnishings. Leslie's Textile Designs now can be found in her Contemporary Fine Art Paintings of sensuous and exotic female figures. The women Marcus paints are draped in finely embellished decorative clothing, posed in lavishly ornate settings. Marcus, is also an Art Educator, and has taught High School and Elementary School Visual Arts. She continues to offer Private & Group Classes in Watercolor and Oil Painting. Leslie has achieved numerous awards & recognition. Her art has been reproduced for wine labels, limited edition giclees, and fine art greeting cards. In January 2012, Leslie's artwork was installed as part of the permanent collection in the New Healing Arts Program at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital in California. In addition, Leslie's work will be featured in a Solo Exhibition at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital's New Birthing Center and Maternity Wing through January 2013. Marcus' ...

Juergen W.d. Stieler - Born 1955 in the town of the pied piper in Lower Saxony, Germany. I left my home town when I was 21 and live in Flensburg, the most northern German city, next to the Danish border. Drawing, painting and printmaking are the techniques I work in. Recently I experimented upon "collecting traces" and converted them in prints to achieve authentic references of everyday occurrences or remarkable events, e.g. the Buncefield oil depot desaster in England Nov 2005....

D Loren Champlin - D. Loren Champlin currently resides in the highlands of Maine with his loving spouse and son. Champlin showed an interest in drawing very early in life. Champlin has been painting professionally since 1992. Early works were predominately done in pastels. After about 1997, he now works predominately in oils, yet the youthful spirit of his work remains the same. Champlin boldly uses colour and line to express his artistic vision. The colour is weaved together to form a tapestry. Bold lines give a feeling of motion and energy. His works are influenced by the passion and energy of life. Painting is the symphysis between artist and subject - the subject and the artist transcends a part of themselves to the painting creating a perfect union. It is a butterfly and the flower, the butterfly paints the flower flowing on the wind to the next to create new life - the miracle of pollenation. Painting is a way of thought. There are no words really to describe the process as thoughts are emotions and hues and shapes. It is calculated chaos resulting in harmony. Painting is to capture the spirit as if one could take a breath of wind, hold it and give...

Jack Mccarthy - I am basically a story-teller who uses prints as my vocabulary. My approach to printmaking is eclectic. On one hand, I use traditional relief printing methods either a baren or a 1947 Vandercook Press, named Ursula. On the other hand, I experiment using brayers, stencils, natural and found objects, anything that has texture. My work is influenced by life experience and, most importantly, my constant amazement of what human beings believe in and how they choose to live their lives! Many of my prints are allegorical in nature and almost all are visual stories. I am presently working on a variety of projects: One is a series of relief prints based on medieval stories, both secular and religious. One edition is comprised of prints depicting religious beliefs and stories of 8th to 14th century Europe, what is normally but erroneously called "The Dark Ages" and/or the Gothic Period. The stories are delightful and, at times, gruesome. Many are Christian stories based on non-Christian (pagan) myths. The second project is a small edition of handmade books with original prints based on the Old Testament. The third is a book which will be a pictorial depiction of the life ...
