Artists Describing Their Art:

Julia Cake - Julia Cake: Sculptress Born: 1973 in Monaco Currently Living in England Introduction Julia's passion for sculpting began when she was 16 after an accident cut short a holiday from another of her true passions, skiing. She enrolled in the famous Beaux Art academy in France to more fully express what was already an over whelming artistic flair. She decided to move into the three-dimensional world of sculpting. This dynamic gave Julia the release she needed to allow her artistic ideas to flow. These ideas when suppressed in earlier years were sometimes misunderstood by those around her, who would comment that Julia's introspective behavior perhap's required a quite different therapy. Her first ever piece "Trois Elephants" was judged 2nd place at an international exhibition in Cannes. She was just 17 years old. From clay she moved into marble, which soon became the stone for which Julia's passion raged. Born in Monaco and growing up in the French Riviera, Julia was able to drive into Italy to hand pick the most beautiful pieces of naturally formed marble to work with. This is what developed her most sought after talent; the ability to take a stone and transform ...

Maria Teresa Fernandes - Admiring Teresa's paintings we are touched by her pictorial sensitivity. Difficult task in light colors (volume and transparencies on a clear basis). Few do it due to the required dedication with pallete knife(no brush). It's painting consacrated by the love to paint. Radha Abramo(Renowned art critique)comments at Solo Exhibition Catalog at SESC Paulista in June 84 -( sent at request and reproduced in one of the pages of this site). ...

Thomas Jewusiak - Artist's Statement I reject the description of the style of my painting as photorealistic. I make no attempt to duplicate a photograph. Although there can be a valid artistic point in doing this, it is decidedly not my point. I attempt to communicate a reality or rather an illusion of actuality, as perceived by the eye and mind that is more intense, more concentrated than that which can be captured by the camera and lens alone. I also attempt a more honest portrayal of what is real than can be produced by the simple photograph. Since many of my paintings are purely conceptual, existing originally only in the imagination, or as a distillation or manipulation of many separate scenes that may exist, did exist or I think existed, the charge of "merely" duplicating a photograph is particularly galling. By representing the finest detail in paint I attempt to foster the illusion, (or foist the illusion), to give a perceived concrete existence to a pure product of the interpretive imagination. The sometimes excruciating detail is fundamental to the intended impression, a sleight of hand (or eye), where we are perhaps distracted by the minutia, enamored of it and thus lulled ...

Debra Cortese - I believe everything on our planet shares a core energy, a vital life force that animates and supports all growth and renewal. In nature, when this energy is balanced and uninhibited by human interference, the flow is smooth, perfection exists. When I am truly in touch with nature, the feelings that I experience are incredibly magical, full of wonder and joy! I create the nature and plant spirit images to share these feelings, and hopefully to evoke similar feelings in viewers and instill a greater respect for the immense value of our natural environment. My visions of the nature energies evolved over many years of personal experience. I was first aware of them as a child playing in the woods and streams of my family home in the Catskill Mountains of New York. In the early 70's I read about the existence of nature spirits at the Findhorn gardens in Scotland. Fascinated by their stories, I began to experiment with communicating with the devas while gardening and hiking in Vermont's Northeast Kingdom. I read voraciously and learned that nature spirits have existed throughout time in almost every culture around the world. I soon realized that my intention was ...

Dana Zivanovits - Dana Zivanovits was born in 1958 in Columbus, Ohio and received his art training from the Columbus College of Art and Design (1978 to 1982). After art school, he went abroad for a year and studied the art of the old masters in London, Paris, Madrid, Rome and Venice. Returning to his studio in Columbus to develop these influences into a new body of work, he then traveled to Mexico and studied the sculpture and painting of that country for an extended period. The unique and vivid colors of Palenque and Vera Cruz intensified his palette. After a period in Ohio, he then moved to Venice Beach, California where the brilliant light of the region reinforced his desire to capture effects of sunlight and atmosphere. Returning to Ohio in 1995, he has continued to paint themes deriving inspiration form sources such as world mythology, classic and B-grade cinema, literature and dreams. However his primary inspiration is direct observation from nature, versus an approach based in art theories or cultural critique. Dana has been widely represented by galleries and exhibition projects including Julie Rico and Mega Boom in Los Angeles, the Venice Art Detour, Around the Coyote Festival in Chicago ...

Jeanie Merila - Art surrounds my life like a blanket, filling my senses with joy and giving me a place to weep with color. Sometimes art is a mirror of my life, but other times it is what remains after life filters through my vision. My art is about color and light. The way light bounces off buildings in the afternoon sun, shadows flickering like transforming clouds. The colors vibrate next to each other, the patterns of leaves and bricks create harmony. The wavering reflections in windows, puddles and canals continue to fascinate me - sky and water become one. I have painted flowers over and over for 20 years, yet the pure hues continue to blend and dance in my watercolors like newborns. The silence of the ocean as I swim below the surface inspires me. The waves above leave twisting shadows on the progressing, swirling sand. The rainbow fish darting among the coral remind me of insects hovering around thriving buds as I gaze into the mystery of the deep azure, waiting for the turtle, manta or shark. The breath of my soul is often revealed through the mystical depths of the ocean or the burst of color on a fragrant bloom. ...

Donna Schaffer - Art has been a main thread throughout my life. It has woven through 23 years of advertising agency and photojournalism experience and has resulted in the development of my personal dimension of oil painting - especially in the painting of incredible undersea environments and marine life. This connecting thread of art has made me very aware of the color and light in the undersea world of scuba diving. I've been a scuba diver since 1976; an underwater photographer since 1983; and a full-time fine arts oil painter since 1998. In addition to lots of dive adventures from Point Lobos to the Monterey Wharf, I've been all over the world to pursue scuba diving adventures - Papua New Guinea, Palau, the Great Barrier Reef, Truk Lagoon, Fiji, Cayman, Turks & Caicos, Bahamas, Roatan, Barbados, and more. At each location the underwater marine life and scenes were photgraphed and sketched. Looking at the resulting slides with an artist's eye has always been a disappointment. Underwater flash photography can cause garish shadows in images. Natural light is too dim to show any color on the exposed film besides blue (especially in these Northern California waters). The deeper a diver goes, the more ...

Roger Farr - Born in Much Wenlock Shropshire, England 1957.One of 14. My family life and upbringing was in the countryside. Always having a love for wildlife and animals, Archibald Thorburn,Fenwick Landsdowne,Raymond Harris Ching,David Shepherd,Rembrant and Mary Cassat were great influences in the early stages and latter stages of my work, this was complimented with having a grandfather who was an artist and a father who was a gamekeeper. Much of my work was self taught up to the age of 18, this was when my first sale of original paintings took place in Salt Spring Island, Canada.Bought by a collector of wildlife paintings who had noticed my work through a member of my family who lives there. In 1985 I started to work for Shropshire Trust For Nature Conservation, providing illustrations of wildlife subjects for schools and colleges. My work started to be recognised and other opportunities arose including other wildlife and community based projects. Whilst visiting Shropshire Conservation Group one day, David Attenborough commented that I should develop this skill further. So in 1993 after a four year course I obtained a BA(Hons) in Visual Communication, specialising in Illustration at Wolverhampton University. On graduating ...

Joel P Heinz Sr. - Joel P Heinz Sr. was born in Hastings, Minnesota; raised and educated in Northern California: served in the Army in Viet Nam, and raised a family in California. He worked in various sales positions until he found his calling working with mentally disabled adults. He is now retired and living his dream in Maui with his wife, Kathy. In 1995, Joel began painting using acrylic paint on canvas with no formal art training. His artwork evolved from associating with other artists and the joy of experimenting and discovery. In the beginning, his favorite subject was Tropical Marine, colorful tropical landscapes and underwater scenes. As part of the evolution of his art, he dabbled in Egyptian art for a short time in order to practice working in detail, a noticeable characteristic of most of his artwork on canvas. For years he had appreciated artwork from a distance only to be disappointed in the lack of detail when viewed close up. He wanted his work on canvas to be detailed enough to be clearly seen whether viewed up close or from a distance. In the 21 years prior to moving to Maui, Joel's twice-annual visits to Maui cultivated an appreciation ...

Luise Andersen - Luise'Mignon' Andersen Luise'Mignon' Andersen has only recently begun to reveal her lifes work. Soon after her debut she exploded onto the mainstream art world. Her breathtaking pieces have captured international interest. The stories Luise'Mignon' is telling through her truly deep, layered works seem to decipher the past and foretell the future, perhaps sharing her window to other dimensions and a seventh sense. Her detailed acrylic'Mignon' series speaks to the beholder. They inspire raw emotion and ignite ones imagination. The indescribable nature of the "Duree De Ma Vie" in particular has a growing portion of the art community considering it the conception of an entirely new style. Luise Andersen - Luana Stebule - My art specifically includes stages projects in Lithuanian theatres, mural paintings together with 22 solos and 37 shared exhibitions. The majority of my current artworks are traditional, oil on canvas. However, my favourite technique is collages, I use mirrors, wood, textile, sawdust, photos. Different texture and different levels of surface create another level of expression. The pictures physical body juxtapose and suffuse it veritably forming jazz of visual performance. In many aspects my style is conceptual, the idea behind the artworks is very important to me. Also, some of paintings have elements of surrealism and pointillism. Anyway my style is unique In order to achieve particular expression, last few years, I am simplifying forms and like sharp contrasts with too many nuances. Too many artist around me are painting abstractions, I got bored and start paint in this manner. From 2013 until 2017 I was only painting and not participating in any art exhibitions or projects. Only in October 2017 for the first time in the UK exhibited my artworks in Milton Keynes art week. Also, created my profile in Saatchi Art Gallery. ...
