Artists Describing Their Art:
Sonja Tellison-Foster - More than simple faerie tales, myths can teach, heal, act as morality guides, or beacons of inspiration along a sometimes murky spiritual path. The myths of a culture are it's soul. They are what's left behind when the political border lines have changed and the people themselves are gone. Myth helps us to understand our own nature as well as that of the world around us. Joseph Campbell, noted scholar and one of the foremost authorities on mythology states, "Myth must be kept alive. The people who can (do this) are artists . . . . The function of the artist is the mythologization of the environment and the world." At a time when we, as a society, rely more on science and technology for answers to our various quandries, than a collective, traditional knowledge, refocusing on mythologization is more important then ever. Are you anxious? Here, take a new pill! Are kids more violent? Must be the video games! The adage "There's nothing new under the sun." is itself certainly not a new concept. If we delve deep enough, the answers are already existent, like diamonds in the dark. When we forget the stories of our ancestors, we forget our...
Laura Luz Cuevas - There are mysteries, certain emotions and powers in my work, which even I don't fully understand, nor do I try to explain them. I accept them in the same manner one would accept the concept of God, completely, blindly and with faith. The more I search the deeper the forces take hold. It is always out of reach not entirely attainable always impenetrable. Mysteries have to be respected if they are to retain their strength. It is a language filled with allegories, which can be compared with intuitive speech, sub-conscious levels of memory, and one that reveals the contents of the collective rather than of personal unconscious. My work comes from three main sources: the first having to do with the diversity and Diaspora of the Caribbean woman; the Marianismo, which defines the Hispanic woman's traditional social role just as machismo ordains how Latino men should behave; the second source centers around the archetypal images and phases of women and finally the mystical traditions of Kabbalah and of spiritual growth. For me, art is a way of processing information and then sharing my perspective. I find that my best work comes about whenever I surrender to the ...

Nicholas Down - During the past few years I have had the privilege of visiting some of the most beautiful landscapes on earth including California's Sequoia National Forest, Yosemite and Joshua Tree National Parks, the red rocks of Sedona Arizona, the tough deserts of Canyonlands and Arches in Utah, Monument Valley in Navajo Nation, and of course the Grand Canyon. I was awestruck with the beauty and silences of these places and deeply inspired to create a number of new paintings and films which attempt to capture the essence of what I felt both as an artist and as a human being. I am increasingly aware of the threats to these landscapes, not just in the short term, but in the future, as the effects of climate change begin to alter rain patterns, glaciers and local ecologies in ways we are only just beginning to comprehend. My paintings are part of my extended homage to nature and are my abstract impressions of colour, mystery, and the spirit of place. My recent paintings have been hugely influenced by the winter here in New York State... frozen waterfalls, ice, snow drifts and landscapes blazing in winter hues. Technical Notes I continue to use the ...
Rita Levinsohn - Welcome to my world of Other Realities. I am a painter of mystical figurative paintings and abstractions composed of acrylic paint and found objects. My concern is for the future of our planet. The animate and inanimate objects within the paintings reflect many incarnations. The message being that it is possible to create rather than destroy....

Jerry Di Falco - Photography inspires my visual art and also serves as a key element in the creation of my etchings. The images I employ originate from my own photographs, as well as those my research into the digital archives of universities, historical societies, libraries, museums, and foundations. Upon locating a photographed scene that I wish to translate into etching, I first make several drawings based on that scene. Moreover, using photography allows me to balance documented visuals with my personal interpretations within everyday scenes. I strive to create a convergence between the metaphysical and physical aspects of perceived reality. My etchings attempt to unveil what we mask behind personal assumptions. In other words my scenes unveil what we overlook in the ordinary world. Ironically enough, I blame this failure to notice reality . . . or what I call the phenomena of connectedness . . . on todayaEURtms infatuation with and addiction to the new communicational technologies. My artworks are windows through which people examine the mysteries of human consciousness. In fact, my use of multiple etching plates to create one etched design helps reinforce the illusion of seeing a scene through a window. Each individual area in my multiple-plate etchings becomes a windowpane separated by ...
Marcelo Maia - Since 1991 I have used photography as the vehicle for discourses on sexuality. Beginning with the sex and money project, the metaphoric images of gogo dancers with cash belts were used to posit a bridge between the viewer, the concept of sexuality and it's relation to money. Next in the book Prometheus, the topic transposes to sexuality and racism. I redirect the Greek myth of the creation of man from the Caucasus to his known anthropological origins in Africa. By producing sensuous portraits of African-American men, I aimed to modulate the cultural image of both God and creation from the white marble to the black skin. The trilogy on sexuality will close with a book on the topic of Sex and Power which I'm working on. Certain that if art has the power to liberate people of their prejudices, I believe that self-awareness requires the analysis of sexuality. Sex has to be understood and not just looked at as tabu material or as a commodity , objectified and but not really discussed. It's time to grow up, to be able to talk openly about ourselves without fear of being labeled and dismissed. Lately I've been ...
Caren Keyser - My expressionist paintings are done using an intuitive process. I begin with the paint and then allow the paint and my subconscious to lead me to the subject matter. Exciting interactions between colors evolve from brushwork, pouring, glazing, spraying and other techniques. I strive to show the essence of the subject rather than paint an overly realistic image. I never know what I will find next in my work. I hope it will be dramatic and emotional. Note that the paintings are not framed. ------------------------------------- I began painting professionally in 1977 after studying art at Florida Atlantic University. There I explored the many styles and techniques available to the acrylic painter. My first photo-realism style piece was created while attending FAU. I knew from that moment that realistic nature scenes would be my style of choice. This remained my theme and style until after 2005. As time has passed my work has changed and become more creative in its processes. Color is still the dominant feature in my work. As my focus has shifted toward expressionism I stored my realism pieces. The originals of many of them are still available for purchase and are included in my inventory here at ...

Franziska Turek - This painting is individual, without any compromise, it combinates the occurence with intuition. The pictures are intrinsic of a special magic, which is not intended or planned, its resulting out of the painting process. The organic impressioned spaces and worlds of this pictures lead to associations and they will contemplate the art of painting themselves, they open a fascinating spectrum of color, area, line, which combines to mythical compactness. ...
Stephanie Hayden - My work varies in style, i try to capture moments of my life on different canvases, from watercolours, acrylics, to montages, sculpture and my photography. Much of my work is dark & disturbing and i can attribute it to the fact that until recently i was registered blind, legally, having been born with dislocated lenses. The more vibrant & colourful works are from my later period after i had surgery to implant interocular lenses, thus i now see the world in a totally different way. This can be seen across my portfolio....
Ned Meneses - Dear reader, The master and the student, being and nonbeing, art has been a way of life for me. At times finding myself on the wrong side of the brush. I have an affinity for nature - Physics & math, and like to be in a state of constant motion. I will explore everything that I can. Styles come and go but what remains is a clean idea that somehow remains on paper (or on light beams) In these exciting times it is not beyond our abilities to reach farther than we ever imagined and redefine ourselves. Coming back to that concept'mastery', as an artist that is all you can try, to see how far you can look into infinity. ...
