Artist Reviews:
Mark Anastasi is a sculptor imbued with a musical flair for form. His works emanate rhythm, harmony, cadence and nuance. He is a fantastic dreamer with a natural inclination towards hewing ‘franca’ or ‘globigerina’ (Malta) stone. His obsession, his fixation is so overwhelming that it leaves him breathless, hardly able ...

| E.V. Borg art critic: Category: Art Review - 0 photos
It is a fantastic, surreal and metaphysical world. It is mysterious, enigmatic, magical, enjoyable and fun. The spell is cast and rhythm and beat overpower us like witchcraft or hypnosis. In just five years Mark Anastasi (1961-) has made his mark in carving limestone with an effortlessness, enthusiasm and gusto that verges on the magical.
It is a passion, an obsession, a therapeutic fling best analysed in a compact, bold and strong male nude. Crouched ... (view photos of this event)

A Chip off the new block
Sculptor Mark Anastasi, who is exhibiting his work at the Corinthia Gallery in San Anton during March, tells Showtime what makes him a rather unusual artist.
The time, patience and intimacy required to shape stone forms a bond between it and myself. The stone is not "worked", instead my thoughts shape the stone while the stone in turn shapes my thoughts, with the end result revealing something new about ... (view photos of this event)

What do we feel, when we come into contact with art? We should feel energy and understand the artist’s plan ,There are works, which are forgotten in 5 minutes, others take time, and most, rarely leave an impression for life. But even in years to come viewing Mark Anastasi’s work will still burn inside .Not all artists manage to achieve this. In general great art form differs from simply art. Great, in my... At the moment, the only inhabitants of Mark Anastasi's workshops are his sculptures
There were reports recently of a crocodile having been let loose at Chadwick Lakes and the police having to scour the area for the missing reptile. In any event no crocodile was found but the incident left sculptor Mark Anastasi wondering as to whether there were any fellow croc-fans around.
That's because up to some years ago a slew ... (view photos of this event)

Hewn out of golden limestone, his sculptures are sinuous, captivating shapes with that unusual edge which kicks out the traditional and kick starts the viewers’ interest. While some of his works are startlingly simple, others are intricate carvings – honeycombed crannies and interwoven stone strands. All are the spontaneous products of Mark’s imagination and skill. For him, carving is not a job or work, it is an overwhelming urge that possesses him from time to ... (view photos of this event)

Lisa Borain speaks to Sculptor Mark Anastasi about making time for the one thing that truly relaxes him.
Mark Anastasi is the only wind-surfing, music-making, reptile-collecting, chess-playing, off-roading, house-converting sculptor I’ve ever met. He is distinctive to say the very least – exceptional in his perception, his interests and most importantly… his art. Nothing about this man is simple.
Mark was always in the clouds at school, carving soap... (view photos of this event)

Art in the form of painstakingly carved new globigerina limestone is the hallmark of Mark Anastasi’s exhibition at Cleland & Souchet, Portomaso, St Julian’s.
This is not Mark’s first exhibition and his works have been on show at St James Cavalier. Several of his pieces are also owned by collectors.
The most recent work includes abstract forms created from single building blocks. Mark unravels for us, the inner passion for hitting a block ... (view photos of this event)

The first time I met Mark Anastasi, he was wearing a sarong. I gave an inward snort. In a Beckham-weary world, you want your sculptors to be solid, rough-cut and stone-dusted, not metrosexual skirt-wearers.
Sarongs aside, Mark couldn't be less like Beckham. Highlighted hair, yes - but it's a sunbleached blonde not a carefully applied salon-job. The deep tan he sports is the kind you pick up after long ... (view photos of this event)
