Artist Statement:
Ashly Ariel Metcalf
Statement
I am a conceptual installation
artist. Most of the work I
create cannot exist without
the space or site in which it
is exhibited. My materials
primarily consist of ceramics
and yarn. By “drawing” (using
yarn as line) through a 3
dimensional space I create
atmospheres or environments in
which the viewer can be
engulfed. Many of the pieces
refer to astronomical space
inspired by String Theory, the
theory of relativity, angles
of parallelism, black holes,
and other theories of physics.
Despite the macro scale
implied by most of the work I
also try to include
microscopic points of
reference by comparing the
nature of the universe in it’s
entirety to the minute
sections of cell structures
and organelles. My work is
inspired by methods of Craft
and references of Heritage Art
while building upon those
movements a different kind of
form and language by opening,
altering, and expanding, its
traditional materiality.
