Artists Describing Their Art:

Austen Pinkerton - Austen Pinkerton If I turn my mind to it very quickly I can come up with several ideas for works aEUR|paintings, drawings, or sculptures. Sometimes ideas come to me when I least expect it, or when my mind is on other things. Ideas can be related to my current experiences, or to my feelings about things that are happening to me in my life at that particular time. Alternatively they can be related to a current interest, or something that occupies my attention at that moment, and my ideas and feelings about which Id like to share with others. A lot of my work is autobiographicalaEUR|either directly or indirectly, consciously or subconsciously. It is frequently very personal, and expresses events or circumstances or experiences in my life. I usually work in either Acrylic on Canvas, Crayon or Pastel, or both together, with Gouache, on card, Drawing in pencil, or Ink, or both, or with creating SculptureaEUR|for which I use fired artists clay. Sculpture follows a completely different set of rules and values from two-dimensional art, obviously, I think of it as Drawing in three dimensions and I take this into account when creating mine. In all my...

J. Brombacher - Art makes the world within the artist visible. Classical music, poetry, Jewish and Chassidic stories, traveling, the love for people and memories of eras gone but not forgotten, cities where I lived and worked, like Amsterdam, Berlin, Jerusalem, New York, or visitedm, lie Prague and Sicily, are the main ingredients of my art. My art is like the water of the canals of my native Amsterdam, Rembrandts city, the deeper you look into it, the more you see. A reflection of a reflection of a reflection...look, what you see is not what you see. My art contains texts and letters, lets writing come alive, and reflects my deep connection with the Dutch 17th century Masters, German expressionism, Russian art and medieval miniatures. My art is also a tribute to music and the world of the great Chassidic masters of Eastern Europe. The Kotzker Rebbe listened to a Chassidic storyteller in the street and stated He told what he wanted and I heard what I needed. That is Art. ...

William Dick - STATEMENT My paintings record my interest in reconciling different and often estranged qualities and ideas in painting. I work through an experimental evaluation of the co-influence or confluence of organic and geometric, texture and structure, density and transparency, the sensuous history of paint and the austere tradition of minimalism. Within the context of abstraction, namely geometric and organic, I begin with the fundamental balance in painting between line and colour. I have drawn on ancient symbolic shapes from my Scottish background and I am influenced by the symbolic power of simplest forms of drawn lines such as the circles, concentric circles and spirals of Pictish and Celtic Art. Linear elements in my work derive from this source as well as from African and Aboriginal Art, Abyssinian Warrior Shields and Russian icons, and other lines and shapes that retain, in the broadest sense, some significance within culture. For colour I begin from observation of geological form and the substance of land of dust, sand, mud and rock as well as the outcrop of local street furniture architecture weather and the effects of weathering, and then of the often extreme and exotic colour of lichen, peat and mosses. My work exploits ...

Sangeetha Bansal - I am a self taught artist, Public health dentist, a trained Indian classical dancer and love to express myself through my dance and art. I enjoy travel and have lived in different countries. During the course of my travels and work, I have had the privilege of interfacing with people across all levels of society, specially with women. I have heard their many stories. I have heard of their struggles, their joys, their beliefs, their love, their superstitions..and I have wanted to shareable of this. So, my work provides an emotional window to this beautiful creation - woman and is an ode to her. aEUR
Marcia Freedman - My art process is part of the contemporary cultural dialogue, observing and commenting on events and things that already exist. I use organic forms found within landscape or the human body as a source. My work is based on visceral reactions based on the fluidity of life and changes that occur in the body due to the effects of genetics and/or the environment. Images of pods, organs, body parts, rocks and cellular forms deteriorate into abstract images conjuring up complex associations, perceptions and emotions connected to the human condition. Source materials are processed so that multiple readings are investigated. Abstract evolving imagery gives insight into the possibilities of processes both artistic and intellectual. The paintings integrate the personal and memory with organic objects exploring science with nature and the potential they present for investigating new ideas to describe the life cycle. They become a metaphor for internal landscapes and external perceptions but on a wider scale transcend the individual to a broader one, open to further interpretations. Original forms are fragmented, deconstructed, fractured and reconfigured into abstract forms as the creative process dictates the way. The physicality of the paint joined with resultant symbols is a narrative or dialogue ...

Judith Fritchman - I cannot remember a time when I did not want to draw or paint. From my earliest childhood days I have found great joy in depicting my surroundings. Compelling images call out to be examined and expressed: a lone oak tree starkly outlined against a curve of corn stubble, a Cezanne-like arrangement of objects on a table as I walk through a room. But of all God's infinitely varied creations, it is the human face and form which most fascinates and humbles me; the possibility of capturing a fleeting aspect of humanity unique to that individual is an endlessly exciting pursuit. After studying at Beaver College, Cedar Crest College, and Lehigh University, I have also studied classical drawing and design for many years with Myron Barnstone at his studios in Coplay, Pennsylvania. There I have learned to examine the work of great artists of the past as instruction and inspiration. Knowing they have pursued similar interests is a gratifying experience, offering the potential for learning something new, and using it to express my own personal images, values, and emotions. It is my hope that each of my works will reflect, in some small way, a facet of the ...

Judith Fritchman - Wayne Wilcox - ArtistaEURtms statements have always seemed redundant to me. The work generally speaks for itself. But here goes.. For me itaEURtms about shapes, color and lines interacting and relating to each other. Representational, abstract, non-objective theyaEURtmre all the same. Light against dark, color against color, line intersecting line. IaEUR~m as comfortable with super realism as I am with abstract expressionism. Then, of course, thereaEURtms the medium. I love the paint. I love the act of painting. I love how it flows and how it takes on a direction on itaEURtms own. ItaEURtms like magic. With one stroke something appears before your eyes that wasnaEURtmt there before. An image. An emotion. With each stroke or drip it changes. ItaEURtms an amazing experience. I highly recommend it. And then thereaEURtms image. I am a visual artist. IaEUR~m after strong images, images that evoke a feeling. Starkness, warmth, love, violence, emptiness, beauty, strength. I want the painting or drawing to stand on itaEURtms own. I am a painter. I cannot escape that fact. There have been times IaEUR~ve tried but I always return. ItaEURtms not what I do. ItaEURtm...

Eve Co - I began painting and drawing in 1987 and have not stopped. I have a wide range from, landscapes, still-lifes, Hubble art galaxies nebulas, abstracts, florals, architectural art and so much more. I draw every day and paint as much as I can afford. I paint more watercolors than acrylic and oil canvas art. I would prefer more canvas art, but I make do with what I have. I try to express myself in artwork as well as with words. I paint landscapes, the glorious colors of nature, water, the ever expressive sky and more, primarily with watercolors on paper. These paintings are usually thought out and planned because they represent nature as I see nature. I paint still-lifes of everyday objects. To teach me about one particular color, shading and or painting glass. I think of still-lifes as a learning process that literally has me pulling my hair out in frustration, but I still paint through how they make me feel... I am fascinated with Hubble Space Technology so, I paint galaxies and nebulas on canvas with acrylic paints. I have sold many of these paintings and I must admit they are some of my favorite subjects...

Donna Gallant - Art is a daily routine in my life. I see, hear, taste, feel and smell the life that surrounds me and I am inspired by the simplest aspects of this world. Whether it be the way the light hits an object or the way objects or forms move in space. I find it all so fascinating and alive. I try to portray these experiences and expressions through my art making....

Noel Stavropoulos - There is great power being an artist. They have influenced and recorded every culture's histories. Much of our knowledge of ancient and modern history today is taken from artifacts (art-i-facts). To have the ability to translate the growth of our civilization today is a gift. I want to give future generations tangible evidence from their history to contemplate and compare to the world we built for them, all the good times as well as the bad. They may learn from our mistakes and take the human race another step in the eternal journey of progression toward "Unity." I seek exhibitions in different countries and cities around the world. This allows me to see how wide, or limited my visual vocabulary really is. Not just from one cultural point of view, but from the masses of the Earth, the people. I then learn from the "Earth's Public" what ideas to expand or abandon. However, in the end, I am still the one who decides the direction of my works. When I create works I am conscious of the world around, so political and social undertone is imminent. I don't think about this while I'm working...

Noel Stavropoulos - Philip Hallawell - I work in various media: oil, watercolor, dry pastels, pen and ink and mixed media. My work is a result of a fragmented view of the world, which gives it a surreal quality. However, my process is not surreal, because I start with a definite theme that I wish to investigate. My main area of interest is people and the human form and I am constantly investigating the physical, intellectual, emotional and spiritual aspects of Man. Over the years I have developed various series, which I revisit periodocally, investigating different aspects. In purely visual terms, what fascinates me is light and form and how I can use diverse visual elements in a complementary way, opposing, for instance, line and form, or rough and smooth textures. The use of diferent materials to achieve diverse expressions, either alone or as mixed media, along with alternating between a graphic representation and a painterly one, or mixing the two, is a very important aspect of the way I materialize my thinking into images. Equally important is the transition from very realistic images to a totally abstract means of expression and alternating between control and expressiveness....

Philip Hallawell -
