Hyun Kyung Yoon Opens
cross mackenzie gallery -
Washington, DC USA United States of America

an exhibition of the new ceramic work of Hyun Kyung Yoon. Her second show with Cross MacKenzie, Yoon’s recent work builds on her earlier wall installations inspired by the art of calligraphy. “Flow” the ceramic installation Yoon mounted in 2008, was made up of 40 individual monochromatic black elements that danced across the space with lyricism and grace. Each element connected visually to the next piece, letter by letter, spelling out a three-dimensional message that spoke volumes. Her language is volume, space, and linear movement. In the recent work, the artist has added new complexities, color, surface design and flame-like spikes to add expressiveness to the parts Read Indepth Article

Frank Gaard: Poison & Candy
Walker Art Center -
Minneapolis, MN USA

“Monet had his water lilies,” writes Frank Gaard, “and I have my panties.” Known for his brash personality and his idiosyncratic art practice, this Minneapolis-based painter has made an indelible mark on the local visual arts community over the past four decades. Using a vibrant, sometimes acrid palette, Gaard offers up satire through imagery derived from his emotional life, intellectual and political obsessions, and relationships, skewering pop culture excesses as well as academic and art world elitism. A large canvas from 1990, Satanic Housekeeping, asks “Would you like to talk dirty with me?” —scrambling French critical theory, Pop art, drugs, assemblage, and portraiture into an inviting, free-associative provocation. HOME.SWEET.HOME
Robert Berman Gallery -
Santa Monica, CA USA United States of America

A collaborative exhibition of images by artist/photographer Gerald Slota with captioning by celebrated playwright/filmmaker Neil LaBute.
The exhibition first debuted in New York City in the fall of 2010 at the Ricco/Maresca Gallery and is the result of an email correspondence between Slota and LaBute from 2008-2010, initially born as a greeting card series that developed into an eighteen text-and-image photographic print narrative of innocuous, suburban domesticity gone subtly and deeply awry.
At the beginnings of their email pen-pal-ship, LaBute suggested investigating a “family affair confessional” as a central theme and soon after offered this evocative thought: “the baby stopped crying hours ago. i’m afraid to go upstairs and check it.” Read Indepth Article

VIVIAN MAIER – A LIFE DISCOVERED
Merry Karnowsky Gallery -
