Biographical Information:
The French Cubist painter George Braque was the son of a commercial decorator and attended the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris. From the beginning his painting style favored a firm arrangement of structured forms rather than luminous color and staccato brushwork.
In 1907 he met Picasso with whom he invented the Cubist style. Influenced by Cezanne's strategem of seeking in nature the cube, cylinder and other solid geometric forms, Braque developed a style where the viewer could look at the various surfaces of his still-life and figure subjects from many angles. Braque used subdued colors of browns, grays and greens instead of the brilliant hues popular at the turn of the century: "Violin and Pitcher" (1910) and "Man with Guitar" (1911). In collaboration with Picasso he founded a revolution in form and space by analyzing the totality of natural forms in space, which was then called Cubism.
By 1910 Braque and Picasso initiated a further development of this style: Collage Cubism. Braque produced still-lifes composed of cut and pasted scraps of different materials with only a few lines added to complete the design :"Le Courrier" (1913). In Collage Cubism the picture space lies in front of the plane; space is not created by illusionist devices, such as modeling or foreshortening, but by the actual overlapping of layers of pasted materials. This was a real break with the familiar perspective space of the Renaissance. Later on Braque and Picasso discovered that they could retain this new pictorial space by painting the same way as they were making collages.
After World War II Braque's style became flatter and more varied in color. "Woman with a Mandolin" (1932) shows Braque's preoccupation with more complex spatial patterns and a greater diversity of context. He uses increasingly brilliant colors. Braque also produced print work and sculptures.
