Artists Describing Their Art:
Steve Doan - A Precarious Balance For The Abstract Painter "Doan's abstract paintings a precarious balance of abrupt explosions of uncontainable gestural energy and soothing, stabilizing structure, which seem to transcend the painterly marks that constitute it. The best abstract painting manages the doubleness with deceptive ease: this simultaneous sense of equilibrium and disequilibrium--not just 'dynamic equilibrium', as Kandinsky called it, but a double vision in which the picture seems a sum of disequilibrated parts that do not add up to a whole and an organically equilibrated whole that is more than the sum of any of its details. Indeed, it rises above then like a mirage of higher unity. Doan's recent abstractions achieve this complex magic. Whether mimetic of abstract, it is the undercurrent of abstract, seemingly arbitrary vividness-willing intensity--that is Doan's basic subject matter."
Sylva Zalmanson - Before I became a painter, before I even thought I could, I would look for long hours at the pictures painted by beloved artists and feel their deep pain. I felt that I was not the only one in this world that had a desperate need to make everyone cognizant of this sorrow. Can anything be more important than irresistible art luring and hypnotizing down through the generations with its mysterious riddle and its genius magic touch....
Micheal Zarowsky - Micheal Zarowsky observes, among other things, the Southern Ontario countryside with great clarity, and he presents powerful impressions of all he sees without a hint of sentimentality. This is genuinely original work in the absence of any striving for novelty for its own sake. Here are our waters edges and forest floors depicted in such a way as to emphasize vibrancy, transparency and wonderful relationships that exists between strong shapes and colours. Never one to be contained by any medium, we have over the years made continuous leaps forward to take the watercolour medium in new directions opening new possibilities, and have once again done so here. I am now painting with watercolours directly on gessoed norwegian birch panels. Working on gessoed panels isn't much fun, being akin to painting on kitchencounter top with every stroke beading up streaking, smearing, misbehaving like so much split coloured water, but I am dazzled by the new textures, the strength, immediacy and directness that results, (and my work on paper is strong). The paintings are finished by painting around the edges and as such can be hung without a frame or floated in a float frame. To secure the watercolour I lightly ...
Yuming Zhu - I land my brush with the force of a giant rock splashing into the ocean. I am not looking for a beautiful painting, but to express Life itself. Painting is just like a stacking of passions. Painting is a method of striping myself naked and facing the truth of my inner emotion. I invite the viewer to experience through my paintings the joy of being alive right at this moment. I believe I can do lots of things, but painting and poetry are the best beloved channels to express my complicated emotions. Originally from Shanghai, Yuming began studying under the masters at a young age. After his BA from China, Yuming came to the States and graduated from Sonoma State University with his MA in 1991. Working in oils, pastels and ChineseSumi Watercolors, Yumings work is a unique blend of East meets West artistry. It is a style that Yuming refers to as Transism, in reference to the constantly evolving interests, which include observations on modern life, a love of music, and an exploration of his own unique heritage. I paint to achieve balance and harmony. Once I reach that, I will for sure break itaEUR aEURoeMy art is just...

Chi Harkrader - Artist Statement A canvas, sculpture, or new media presents a stage for me to examine the visually driven attributes of light, perspective, color, form, and movement. Past experiences, present environment, imagination, and experimentation with mixed media allow me to echo my passions, peace, or pleasure. Expression from impressions encountered in urban, rural, or figurative life evolve. Form and color are fashioned from the physical, mental, or spiritual. Red and black may stir energy or passion. Ochre or sienna may prompt an affection of earth or rock. I draw, painting, sculpt or video with paint, found objects or software. Three-dimensional interior or exterior attachments are sometimes explored. My new work may shadow my previous series and motifs, as I strive for that elusive originality. My exploratory nature for diversity keeps me moving in and out of my compound-ongoing series (Action / Onyx / Lyric / Urban / Corolla). Sculpture and video now parallel my inventive journey.
