  • Artists Describing Their Art:

Sonja Kobrehel - My work in visual arts reflects the constant changes and experiences in my personal life. I am guided by my feelings, thoughts, dreams and visions. The sources of my inspiration are many: an appreciation for personalities and the human scale: in particular, I love to look for traces of people who came before and clues about what they did there and why. Journeys are an integral part of my artistic inspiration. The Mediterranean and Adriatic atmosphere that pervades my work comes from the summers I spent on the French and Adriatic coasts.I am always intrigued by the human cultural elements and visual stimulation that I encounter.I find that every place and culture reveals its beauty to me though everyday life. I like to use symbols in my art work and while creating my personal iconography. The symbols are clues to many aspects of my life, but my paintings usually start with a color idea, then evolve into compositions in which color is the primary subject. I work in collage, various media on paper and canvas, mixing everything possible together in a visual format for public display.Much attention is given to the surface texture by adding different materials, ...

Mark Schwing - Ideally the artist is employed by society at large. The artist helps define culture and culture makes us who we are in whatever time and place we are at. Of course most of us are not living in caves anymore but even then art helped society function; helped the hunter hunt, showed people what to do. Art is still showing people what to do in a way. Whether it is raising awareness by showing what is going on, teaching by example or simply exploring ideas that give people ideas. My art is about ideas as much as anything else but it is a surrealistic and intuitive approach. So what is presented isn't a literal interpretation, it is more like exploring the idea with art. It is really another reality. It mirrors our reality and/or it is influenced by our reality. I can't help but be affected by what is going on around me and I am interested in the transcendental as well. Please visit my website, www.markschwing1.com, for more images....

Yucel Donmez - Yucel Donmez's place in Turkish and American Art History: Yucel Donmez has been continuing his artistic work in Chicago since 1980. He has staged many exhibitions both in Turkey and in the States and was accepted into one of the most influential art encyclopaedias to shape American art history, 'Who is Who in American Art' in 2000. His inclusion in the 'Biographical Encyclopaedia of American Painters, Sculptors and Engravers of the U.S.' in 2002, followed by the 'Devonport's Art Reference' encyclopaedia, Donmez has secured a permanent place in American art history. Yucel Donmez also appears among the 63 artists from Chicago to have entered the renowned art reference book, 'Art Diary International', published every year by the famous 'Flash Art' magazine in Italy. Awards: 2003 'Who is Who in American Art' prize plaquette Donmez has been recognised by American art critics (Alan Artner, Chicago Tribune, 1989) as an artist who has shed new light upon the art of painting with his self-developed painting techniques. He obtained 'The National Medal of Art' one of the most important awards in the United States in 1995, for his 11-year-long ...

Robert Pelles - As an award-winning practitioner of Hungarian commercial graphic art (a career he forsake after 20 years of owning his own successful design firm in order to commit himself solely to painting), Pelles understands and delights in using the idiom of abstract forms. His paintings tell stories about people. Even his houses-- memory scraps on Robert's' never-land landscapes -- come to vividly throbbing life in the absence of figurative forms. The conceptual quality of Pelles' art, his superior drawing skills, concordant use of color and structural harmony have made him one of the most sought-after Central European artists today. ...

Darla Fisher Odjig - 7th. World Aboriginal Image Maker Vision: the belief that symbology will be a huge part of the art. That all may project a uniqueness of their Indianess through this. I promote the essence of my culture through the educating of Cultural diversity & visions through symbols. The sharing through symbology/pictorial imaging precipitates a phenomenon of altruism and healing. Guidance through mind, heart, body and spirit is essential to envisioning a holistic sense of self. In reference to Creative Extraction, expression toward the enhancing of emotion and identification of authentic values and feelings enable release and validation. Building of inner strength and outer relationships are important to communicating who we are. Reflecting on shadow imaging and of internal elements will allow for visioning and creative connectedness. Our Community includes the participating of connecting with the public through the art and its symbolic representation regarding the intergenerational affect as illustrated by symbolic historical referencing and recording. The developing of inner creativity through outer expression allows a sense of identity and connecting of 2 worlds within. Integrating Aboriginal artistic mastery with Western/European mastery as a recognized fine artistry brings a unified and elegant fusion of a unique vision of true Canadian Fine ...

Laurie Macmillan - Born in Greece, and having also lived in Israel and Nicaragua as a young child, I never felt as if I belonged in the Illinois of my childhood. I was irresistibly drawn to the West, where spaces were large and choices were expansive. To me, that landscape was exotic, and the geology was fascinating. I was also driven to explore the world. In 1973 I visited several third world nations and saw horribly overcrowded slums, realizing then that overpopulation was the world's worst problem. Travel was my focus for thirty years, along with hiking in the jagged, dramatic mountains of California's eastern Sierra. Now, painting has become my new travel, and an even more rewarding path to discovery. Although largely self-taught, I attended a weekly abstract painting workshop for several years, and have participated in numerous other workshops. Probably the artistic movement that has influenced me the most is abstract expressionism, and I love its depictions of pure energy. Tonalist paintings have always appealed to me; realism does not. I'm most interested in the play between color, texture and shape, and I paint with both ends of the brush, a palette knife, combs, sponges, seed pods ...

Pawan Sharma - Personification of thought impregnated into the womb of Human Psychology. The subject which I have selected is mainly based on human behavior or one can say Rasas of Life, their generation and projection. The generation in human through cultural, personal and environmental influences, which I want to project in my painting and Drawings by incorporating living and non living materialistic objects to depict virtual beauty. My few works are done on the same subject and I wanted to proceed in this path further. The process required communication with different people of different areas, their social and cultural presentation, relation with surrounding, behaviour communication Body Language. By modifying their gestural language feelings into more immaculate thoughts by giving them visual effect through my colour, canvas and brushes. It is an interesting method to present something which is intangible transformed into tangible form. Now which is perceptive in form, converted into commonly seen things in surroundings and further more interesting is to relate two different things on some idea. My work need continue development form beginning till end. It has own modified routes, meander, curves and bends, can be found in course of journey. Thank you. Pawan Kumar Sharma ...

Jan Theuninck - Abstract painter and poet, his work is about The Great War, old and new colonialism, the international migration society, pacifism, the jews and the holocaust. On his painting Holocaust and his poem Shoa, he said : Those things are inextricable bound up in my mind, with words I make an image and vice versa !...

Mary Zeman - in 1997, I began to paint after I had brain surgery to remove a benign brain tumor from the right side of my brain. I was recovering from surgery, and out of the blue, I called my mom and asked her to take me to buy some paint and brushes. This was the first time I ever painted in my life. While I was growing up, I was never exposed to art and just didnt know anything about it, though I had always wanted to learn more. I began painting on wood, paper, newspaper, anything I could find, then I started to paint on canvas. When I went back to my job in television, people looked at my art on the walls of my cubicle, and some people encouraged me to go further with it. I would work all day, then come home and paint at night, and looked forward to the time I would be painting. In October of 2000, I decided to leave my job and make a go of being a full-time artist. Everyday, I learn something new about art, and I love making art. The biggest compliment I can get is when adults look at ...
