  • Artists Describing Their Art:

Kees Van Eyck - My works of art express a metarealistic perception of our world, traditional in the history of Dutch painting. However, the source of my inspiration can also be found in European surrealism as well in American hyper-, and photo realism. In my collection Portraits of Icons of the post-war period of the 20th century I introduced the iconography of our era. These images of celebrities characterise movie-stars, media personalities plus inspirational individuals from the field of music, art, politics and philosophy. With these portraits I pay tribute to famous people with extraordinary gifts and talents, who influenced the development of mankind and left their mark on various fields during the 20th century. My perception of life on Earth is often depicted in a surrealistic manner. My attitude towards our environment is charged with criticism as well as hope for a better future. My paintings aspire to evoke the sense of beauty and to raise awareness of burning issues in todays world....

John Tierney - The paintings I make are charts of wanderings; what I mean by that is: you can wander around a painting and have, at least sometimes, a feeling of recognition of the place where you are. But the place can shift into a new location, you lose your bearings and then find yourself by intuition. You don't know how you got there, but you know where you are. There are well-beaten tracks and waymarkings that appear familiar. When I set off on a new canvas, white, pristine, in the morning, I often think why should I want to mess this up? It's like an empty mirror, but when the first few marks are made, it changes. It has direction, it begins to beckon you. Making the decision to start is the important thing, it doesn't seem to matter what you do. Disparate things can be united, related somehow. Dialogue begins. You're conscious of what is going on in one direction, but a lot is happening along the wayside. Contrasts are important: for example, organic versus geometric. Organic forms arise from memory. There is the energy of the life form against the rectangle of geometric space. Color...

Bryce Brown - Brown focuses on simple moments of New Zealand life and reflects these scenes through his paintings with an earthy quality. i?1/2I feel compelled to make figurative paintings, to capture subtle movement and gestures and to evoke positive emotion through certain poise. I am always looking for images and movement to find strong line, usually working the image to a point where I have simplified and heightened the figure at the same time.i?1/2 Brown has paintings in collections in New Zealand, Australia, Europe and the USA. Susan Cantor-Uccelleti - My Statement as an artist and what art means to me and effects my life aEURoeArt Heals Body and SoulaEUR Abstract Expressionism gives me the freedom to express my inner feelings and also how I see the world around me through color and movement. My paintings are my life on canvas which I hope to be able to share so others can see the beauty and the wonders around us. This gives me purpose to go on, to be able to create is to live. Painting has always been part of life, in my early years I painted what I was able to see, but now I paint my emotions. My life, as everyone, has had its ups and downs. Each of my paintings represent my moods and situations around me. When you first look at my art, you will see colors, but as you back up and study each painting, you will see something different. Each piece of my artwork has some part of me which I gratefully want to pass on to you. My work is all original, there are no copies or prints, each one of a kind. When I paint, I think colors, movement and balance, ...

Elizabeth Barber Leventhal - My work speaks to the emotional attachment I have to the ocean. I grew up in coastal Massachusetts. The ocean was my playground, my summer and is my biggest inspiration. The changing of season's affect the ocean are my strongest memories. Within it I find organic shapes, perfect in their form, that captivate me. Just as each element in nature is designed for a purpose resulting in beauty, I strive to conduct the materials to come together creating a replica of the perfect beauty I find in God's creation all around me. My thought process is the result of endless experimenting trying to keep the beginning idea fresh. I reveal what I enjoy about the process of painting. In the end I allow the gems I find to speak clearly. Layers of materials are built up to create depth and movement. Each layer is a catalyst to the next phase of the process. The painting begins with a wash of color. Color is applied with brush or by pouring and dripping. Water is then added to the canvas either thrown or poured in areas. The water allows the color to move, mix and interact in ways I cannot ...

Mert Ulcay - Mert Ulcay was born in Istanbul, Turkey in 1974. After studying to obtain a Bachelor of Economics in Istanbul, he moved to Italy and successfully completed a Masters Degree in International Economics and Management in Milan. He started his painting studies in 1996 with Mehmet Guleryuz (one of Turkey's leading contemporary painters) at his Bilsak Atelier in Istanbul. He moved Sevinc Altan in 2000, who was a former assistant to Mehmet Guleryuz, opening two exhibitions with her atelier. His works were chosen by the Cagdas Sanat Committee in 2001, for an exhibition with other "up and coming artists" at the Contemporary Art Center in Istanbul. In 2003, he participated in the "International Art Action for Peace" exhibition, with several leading painters in Turkey and moved to Stuttgart, Germany, where he now lives and works, painting from his own atelier. Mert Ulcay's paintings can be described as being emotional, somewhat introvert and very figurative. Always being interested in different expressions of people and of hidden feelings shown from behind "the mask". MERT ULCAY- www.mertulcay.com ...

Hooshang Khorasani - The work of Hooshang reflects a bold contemporary style, with hues that alternate between muted and highly energized. He paints on canvas, board and paper using acrylic, oil, pastel, charcoal and pencil. His work ranges from brushwork to washes to work with a palette knife. He says this about this work - I paint in layers, adding texture, but it is as if the paint itself takes part in the creative process. I am the tour guide on the journey, but there is another participant My hands are virtually channeled into a universal source of energy. And that energy, in turn, pulses through my brushes and artist tools. Indeed, the common theme for all my works is energy - energy in nature and the world around me, in moving colors that show power, in the inner life of my subjects. I seek to unveil the mysteries and beauties of the universe. ...
