Artwork Description:
Commissioned piece for the curch of our lady of the ascension in Povoa de Sta Iria on the outskirts of Lisbon. the central figure is an adaptation of a stained-glass work by the famous portuguese painter Nuno Goncalves [15th century]. This version on canvas is composed of 10 panels with a 10cm gap between each panel - it measures approx. 500 x 350 cm and was meant to make up for the shortage of windows in the building by playing on the idea of stained glass. The severing of the figure of the madonna and christ shocked the congregation at first. I explained that whilst in contemplation the gaps allow for the viewer to merge with the piece - the madonna is not a separate entity appearing as a block-[age] and thus becomes more receptive.
