Artwork Description:
This work shows an Eastern European Chassidic funeral as could be seen before the War. A man with a tzedaka box walks in front of the coffin, because 'zedaka matsil min ha-mavet', charity saves from (spiritual) death. Seeing this picture evokes happiness, because this person who died before the War got a decent funeral, and sadness, because a funeral naturally induces feelings of mourning.
