Artist Statement:
ARTIST’S STATEMENT

As individuals, we understand life from our personal perspective. Likewise, the artist’s perception of the world is unique. When we create, it is from our own experience, our peculiar understanding of how things operate. The true artist’s work is not an “outlook” on life, but rather a glimpse inside, to the essence of that person. That essence colors all concepts.
My perceptions tend to be quirky, not wrong, but not quite conventional. This allows the viewer to recognize the image in the painting but to understand at the same time that it is outside reality, no matter how realistically rendered. It may leave the viewer slightly off balance.
Frequently, I paint subjects that are familiar: houses, their interiors, especially chairs. Home represents a place of safety for most of us, a place where we can feel free to be ourselves. A chair lets us view the rest of the world freely from a safe perch. Hence, my paintings will give the viewer an off-kilter look at the world, but one that does not threaten.
Also key to my work is a sense of joy, vitality and humor... For of what value is it ...
