Artist Statement:
For me, there is immense pleasure, excitement and serenity in creating with clay. My hope is to pass on a simple pleasure to those who also feel drawn to this ancient and inviting connection with the earth. Using a variety of decorating and firing techniques, I create hand-built and wheel-thrown stoneware pottery with reckless abandon! The result is one-of-a-kind decorative and functional pieces.
Though I also produce glazed work, I prefer more primitive ortraditional firing methods. Pit firing is one such approach and is a further connection with the earth. Pots are fired in an earthen kiln (mine is an 8'L x 4'W x 4'D hole in the ground). The pots are placedon a bed of sawdust along with various organic and chemical combustibles. Wood is mounded over the pit and set ablaze. The fire rages, and is then covered. Smoke and flames licking the surfaces create surprising and uniquely beautiful results!
