Artist Statement:
I discovered my artistic abilities at a young age but was never encouraged to pursue those talents because of my strict up bringing and the standards of living for blacks in the south. Instead, I pursued my more “accepted” talent as a saxophone player. Before long, my passion for art had been replaced with my new love of music.
To my misfortune, by the time was I was 16 years old, I had drastically altered that promising future hoped by my parents. I was now on trial for murder and robbery. I had allowed my talents to cloud my judgment by thinking I was untouchable. Instead, my future was now taking me to prison.
Although I was now living the next few decades of my life behind bars, I still dreamed and searched for avenues to pursue those passions within. I had opportunities to play with a few bands for events both inside and outside of prison.
During my first prison sentence, I started again to rediscover my desire to be an artist and invite the freedom that comes with artistic creation. I found that not only was art therapeutic, it also served as my disguised outlet for expression. Freedom ...
