Statement
“I am interested in the balance of elemental forces: specifically, nature and industry - man’s desire to build and maintain while nature moves to break down and reclaim. Aesthetically, there is a point where these opposing forces reach equilibrium. My work inhabits this transient space. Constructed of balanced lines, ambient geologic textures and organic coloration, the work implies the passage of time on a grand scale and is in reverence to nature’s infinite and subtle detail.”
Lovell’s work is characterized by the use of alternative materials and process. Combinations of metal powders, plaster, wax, epoxy, shellac, tar and resin are layered onto constructed wooden surfaces and then subjected to abrasion, carving, and oxidation. True green and blue hues are derived from oxidized copper, brass and bronze, while rusted iron and steel produce rich earth tones .Lovell continues experimentation with different materials and techniques to achieve true elemental color and form....
