Artist Statement:
The media provides a depository of that which is popular, historic, modern, post modern, relevant, and irrelevant to culture and society. Collaging pieces of media and liberating them from their original environments and intents to create new formal and psychological ones is my process in thought and execution. I have been a media artist for almost twenty years. I started as an urban landscape and studio assemblage photographer where my interest lay in flattening very densely layered images. Photography was a truthful act which could be framed and lit to do perceptual tricks. However, photography as a medium for me, had its limitations. I wanted to have more control in how I structured my work and more improvisation in where it went. Collage became the most coherent and natural medium for me to formalize my vision. I think about weathered billboards which tell a visual history layered in disparate images. The visual fabric of urban landscapes is woven in a continuous pattern of isolated images creating one whole. The simultaneous perception our minds have in accumulating and organizing the isolated sparks of these moments combine to form my collages.
