Michael Pettit: A Two Part Solo Exhibit
AVA - Association for Visual Arts - Cape Town, ZA South Africa

THE AVA in partnership with Spier invites you to two solo exhibitions by MICHAEL PETTIT: FIGURATIVE PAINTINGS - Part 1 of Pettit's double exhibition at the AVA, AND LYRICAL ABSTRACTS - Part 2 will be held at the Joao Ferreira Gallery. Michael Pettit will show his new paintings in a double exhibition at two Cape Town galleries in October, his figurative works at the AVA and opening two days later his lyrical abstracts at the Joao Ferreira Gallery. At the AVA, Pettit's paintings explore images and archetypes of theatre, opera, clown and magician. The characters presented are like travelling players, artists who creatively transform the absurdity, pain and brevity of life into wit, invention and transcendence. Sacred play, surreal leaps and poetic conjunctions abound. Read Indepth Article

Details of Architecture:Photographs of Urban Artifacts by Ellen Fisch
Karpeles Manuscript Library Museum - Newburgh, NY USA United States of America

The Karpeles Manuscript Library Museum presents "Details of Architecture: Photographs of Urban Artifacts by Ellen Fisch" from Friday, October 3 continuing through Friday, October 31, 2008. Ellen Fisch is an artist in many media and subjects, but she has always had a special passion for the details of architecture created in various materials on building facades. Since studying photography at Brooklyn College, she has dedicated herself to capturing these often-unnoticed details--flowers, gargoyles, arabesques, and interlocking bands--that decorate public and private structures, preserving a visual record of peripheral elements that provide insight into the architectural aesthetics of their period. The motifs that she has preserved with her lens include ornamental details influenced by the art and cultures of Africa, Asia, and Europe as well as the United States, celebrating a craftsmanship that makes, as the artist has noted, “even the most modest establishment a structure of beauty.” Her work both satisfies the eye and records an important part of New York City’s architectural heritage. Ellen Fisch has been a Premiere Portfolio Artist at absolutearts.com since 2004. Read Indepth Article

Google pays Library of Congress $3 MILLION for Orphan Works Legislation
Walter King, USA

1. Web firms quietly win copyright victory in Congress

SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) Sept 29 -- As the media turned its attention last weekend to battles on Capitol Hill over the fate of the proposed Wall Street bailout bill, Internet companies including Google Inc. and Microsoft Corp. quietly walked away with a legislative victory that could facilitate their use of copyrighted material.

The Senate on Friday passed the Orphan Works Act of 2008, legislation that weakens copyright protection for works whose owners cannot be located. The legislation has now been referred to the House Judiciary Committee.

The legislation requires only that a company make a "reasonably diligent" search to locate a copyright owner before using their work in media including the Internet, and limits compensation required for the use of an infringed work.
