Artist Statement:
I have been drawing and painting all my life and it has brought me much joy. Like all creative people who have the capacity to do so; I express my experiences through my work; generally from an attitude of engagement and fascination. As a mid-career artist my work has become less impetuous, less driven by emotion, and more interested in reaching a sensitive and truthful interpretation of whatever animal or scene or object I am conveying
I paint in a way that seems quite direct, but in fact much is distilled in the process of drawing studies. I often go on sketching expeditions, especially in our local Auduban woodlands.
I am seasonal with the paintings, responding to light conditions, the landscape or lack of it, and often to simple things like someone giving me flowers. I often work within the genre of still life, and that work could be categorized as being part of some sort of pattern school. Whatever that is. I am most obviously influenced by Matisse. I do not feel that there are already enough beautiful paintings in the world, or that my work has no practical purpose. I believe it comes from the world of ...
