Artist Statement:
My strongest pieces are
painted from an intuitive
state of mind, supported by a
foundation built on a
classical study of art and
history. For the most part, I
paint in the tradition of what
I call "Expressive Realism".
Whether the subject is
figurative, still life,
landscape or abstract, I
approach the canvas first with
a gentle probing inquiry into
my subject, and finish with
directness and eagarness to
express the Truth I have
found.
I feel my best work epitomizes
what Italians call
"sprezzatura". The piece
appears simple and
spontaneous, and may contain
an element of surprise in the
form of a color, a brush
stroke, a shape, a scrape, a
blend, creating a visually
rich mysterious surface, or
sometimes a visually subtle
mysterious surface, yet,
either way, looking as though
it took no effort at all....
