Two Cultures, One Soul: Work by John Weeronga Bartoo
Toowoomba Regional Gallery - Toowoomba, QL AU Australia

"Two Cultures, One Soul" atToowoomba Regional Gallery running from July 2 - August 3, 2008, is the first solo exhibition by Australian Aboriginal Artist John Weeronga Bartoo in eighteen months. Invitees to the opening on July 5 will be able to view the exhibition to the haunting sounds of the didgeridoo while savouring some bush foods. John, a self taught artist takes us on his journey over the past five and a half years in "search of himself." Raised and educated in a European lifestyle with no connection to his Aboriginal culture or community, it was in late 2002 while recovering from illness that he felt an urge to paint. He started painting in February 2003 and a few months later won the first art competition he entered. John Weeronga Bartoo has been a Premiere Portfolio Artist at absolutearts.com since 2007. In Season by Tjasa Owen
Hang Art - San Francisco, CA USA United States of America

HANG ART announces In Season, a solo show of new paintings by Tjasa Owen, on display from July 1 through July 31, 2008. A reception for the artist will be held on Second Thursday, July 10, 2008 from 6-8pm at 556 Sutter St, San Francisco. Owen's work is inspired by the coastlines of the Atlantic and Pacific as well as travels abroad.  The artist reassembles the elements of remembered scenes in order to create vivid landscapes that can be adopted and shared. The artist employs acrylic, oil pastel as well as collage media in her canvases, utilizing vintage stamps and postage markings.  Owen likens her process to 'conjuring a landscape postcard… reproducing it on canvas, and, by adding an ink stamp, sending it back into the world.' The notion of travel is central to her work; besides representing landscapes blended from the artist's imagination, the paintings look as though the viewer is actually speeding past them. To Show or Not to Show: That is the Question
Ellen Fisch, USA

As an artist, I am always tempted to show my work: any of my work. I work very hard to perfect my art and I want and need approval for my efforts. Then, too, I am producing visual creations. The main reasons for creating my art are to express myself through my art and to have others view the work. The question is what do I show? To whom do I show it? When do I show it? Where do I show it? And the answer, I suspect, lies in what I expect to gain from showing my work. I have always known the questions and the answer, but it has taken me a long time to refine and define. Recently, a wonderfully insightful photographer told me to focus solely on my objective and the rest will come. I do believe he is right.

So much of my energy in the past has been centered on proving myself via my art. I am now focusing on creating art and as my friend says: the rest will come - or maybe it won't, but I'm giving it my best shot. For too long I've been concerned with "making it," thus producing work that the public would like and ultimately buy.
