Nancy Baker: Duck and Cover Drill
Denise Bibro Fine Art -
New York, NY USA United States of America

Nancy Baker: Duck and Cover Drill at Denise Bibro Fine Art from September 4 to October 4, 2008, depicts apocalyptic scenes set in intricate landscapes populated by naked figures who alternately flee in fear or dance in oblivious revelry. Borrowing imagery from Medieval and Baroque art, Baker also incorporates science fiction, cartoon, and other pop culture iconography, creating a rich temporal tapestry, while deliberately mingling high-brow and low-brow tastes. A truly facile painter, Baker's work encompasses multiple modes of rendering, from traditional, highly modeled forms to decorative patterning, and flat silhouetted forms.

THE KINGDOM OF THE BLIND: Hugh Locke
Institute of International Visual Arts - INIVA -
London, United Kingdom

For the past ten years, Hew Locke's work has explored the visual display of those in power and those who aspire to power. His immense and complex architectural installations and, more recently, his monumental wall drawings and figurative sculptures are made from the mundane, bright and sparkling ephemera of street markets and pound shops. They adopt, question and subvert the iconographies and language of royalty and government in relation to notions of power and cultural identity. In this major new installation for Iniva at Rivington Place, Locke brings together these formal and thematic elements of his practice to create his first ever ‘museum display' - a fictional collection of the possessions of an imaginary ruler. Ken Lochhead: A Celebration of Colour
Ottawa Art Gallery -
Ottawa, ON CA Canada

Ken Lochhead: A Celebration of Colour, featured from September 2 until 27, 2008 at Ottawa Art Gallery is an exuberant reflection of Kenneth Lochhead's life-long love affair with colour, representing over three decades of work. Colour floats on the surface of his spray paintings of the early 1970s, and is the major structural component of playful birds which date from the late 1970s. Abstract enamels of the 1980s display colour laid on with either a scraper blade or a brush, while landscapes of the later years show works saturated with hue.
"I like to paint, and I believe in the celebration of life. Through painting I find some love and joy. It is all worthwhile." - Kenneth Lochhead

Artblogs - Art Blogs:

VICKY CRISTINA BARCELONA
Michael Corbin, USA>
Every blue moon, I'll see a film that I think everyone should see. In this case, the film is Woody Allen's "Vicky Cristina Barcelona." It's a MUST see ... especially if you're the creative type. More on that in a few seconds.
First off, NO ONE weaves a tale like Woody Allen. I cannot think of another director whose storytelling is so beautifully intricate and seamless, yet at the same time, you can almost see the wheels turning inside his head. I'm going to tell you about this film without actually telling you about it. Woody Allen is not in the film, nor is he the narrator, nor is it based in New York City, yet this is the quintessential Woody Allen film. Woody Allen in Barcelona.
