Artist Statement:
I learned about art through music but my childhood interests were limited to music—piano, pipe organ, French horn and some dance—enhanced by summers spent at Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp in Whitehall, Mich. My family is artistic, but I struggled to visually express myself and eventually gave up until my post-college years. I did, however, continue studying Salvador Dali and Pablo Picasso, and later Jean Michel Basquiat, Joyce Scott, Susan Green and Madeleine Ricks. Their work might not be understood by the masses, but admirers feel the spirit that exists within each piece that transcends the dimensions of time and space. I seek to do the same.
My jewelry is based on mood and instinct. I do not use patterns, sketches or photographs. I simply let my beads speak to me. Each piece is created on a whim and I never know what a piece is going to look like until I've completed it. I am most moved by earth colors, textures and shapes, and Naga and Huchol themes....
