Artist's Statement:
Imagery as metaphor was central to my early body of work, being primarily concerned with the physical and intellectual limits of the human condition.
Video vignettes and drawings derived from them evolved into narrative paintings in the early 1980's. These paintings developed my interest of resolving the contradiction of combining elements of realism with abstraction.
The non-specific landscapes of the Italian Light series led me to an appreciation of Greek and Roman Art and of the Old Masters, resulting in the Scanning Art History series. Technically, I was interested in replicating historical art pieces, abstracting them with scan lines or pixels, but retaining a recognizable image.
The Greco-Roman Fragment and Torsos series, continue the historical art references, but with generic images, These paintings are the culmination for me of process, technique, metaphor, integration of background with an ethereal central image, a sense of agedness, and beauty.
I have rejected the common art world posture of assuming a "signature style" and then developing every conceivable variation. I have remained consistent and resolute in the belief that every body of work has to challenge my technical and esthetic ...
