Artist Statement:
In The Mourning of Life
The terminal illness and eventual death of my mother-in-law as well as my ongoing preoccupation with death inspired this body of work. The work draws on my intrigue with the traditions and rituals of other cultures -particularly Victorian memorial rituals using hair and Mexican prayer paintings and milagras - in coping with the reality of death and mortality while using my own body, my face and hands in particular to explore and mark our process of living and dying.
I created most of the images without the use of camera or film utilizing the scanner, my body and objects to capture elements for my imagery. ...
