Artist Statement:
Working in a steel foundry is busy, hot, dusty work during the daytime hours, but after hours can be a fun and interesting place!
SteelArt is two different forms of artwork, both derived from molten steel.
The wall hangings are made from alloy steel. They are made by melting steel and various alloys to temperatures approaching 3,000 degrees F. in a large furnace and tipping the molten metal onto flat molding surfaces.
Each piece is individually made and all the pieces vary in size and form. No two pieces are identical. Since they are made from solid steel, the pieces can be quite heavy.
The paper weights are made from dross which is the impurities in the molten steel which rise to the top of the furnace as the steel is melted. The dross is scooped off the top of the liquid steel and dripped onto flat surfaces, forming unique and interesting pieces.
As the red-hot dross cools, the colors and textures emerge in a delightful array of extrordinary pieces.
The various alloys in the steel and the content of the impurities results in the differing colors, textures, and patterns of the paper weights.
