Artist Statement:
Although I created and studied art well before studying chemistry, I owe a large part of my current artistic sensibility to my involvement in science. During my pursuit of chemistry, moments and events gradually acquired names and the world turned into a language of formulas... But once something could be named and broken down it no longer contained its powerful, awe-inspiring mystery. As a result, and despite my continued love of chemistry, I experienced anguish and a desire to restore the enigma of life.
In addition to my involvement in science, various personal experiences informed other aspects of my creative sentiment. For example, a lot of my artwork exhibits merging dualities. This stems from influences such as illness, culture shock and identification with ideologically conflicting sides. The dual impact of these events – the combination of fortune and misfortune – motivates my interest in the unity of opposites and ways in which they are integrated or interchangeable. Firm ideologies became meaningless, and questioning or just experiencing became more valuable.
Instead of serving as a means of self-expression or communication, art fulfilled the role that chemistry once had: it became an avenue of exploration and discovery. Unlike chemistry however, art reclaimed...
