Artist Statement:
A Little Bit About How and Why
SB Washburn Became an Artist

SB Washburn was a young girl,
very like many young girls
who, although she did very
well in school, did not know
quite what to do with her life
when she attained the age at
which she thought she should
try to decide upon a career.
She found it very easy to do
well in almost all of her
subjects. The subjects that
were, for her, sometimes
almost incomprehensible, she
also did very well in, but she
decided not to make them her
life's work, as she felt they
might not be her forté. The
subjects she found came more
easily to her, she felt might
be too easy to consider for a
career.
She was very challenged and
stimulated by her study of Art
in school when she was very
young. She found a role model
in her grandfather whom she
loved very much. He would
have, in her opinion, been an

Why Did You Become An Artist A Little Bit About How and Why SB Washburn Became an Artist

SB Washburn was a young girl, very like many young girls who, although she did very well in school, did not know quite what to do with her life when she attained the age at which she thought she should try to decide upon a career. She found it very easy to do well in almost all of her subjects. The subjects that were, for her, sometimes almost incomprehensible, she also did very well in, but she decided not to make them her life's work, as she felt they might not be her forté. The subjects she found came more easily to her, she felt might be too easy to consider for a career.
She was very challenged and stimulated by her study of Art in school when she was very young. She found a role model in her grandfather whom she loved very much. He would have, in her opinion, been an extremely talented painter had he not had an extremely time consuming albeit very lucrative career in the uniform cleaning business. He painted in his spare time. Her grandfather, who was also a part-time magician, taught her in various weekend increments, the amazing feat of creating an image out of thin air. The apprenticeship with her grandfather, who was a great teacher, and the sense of power, the satisfaction in the crafting of something entirely new, and the tactile control she felt during the time she spent creating her own works, cemented SB Washburn's lifelong fascination with the medium of paint on canvas. So she sacrificed a career in teaching and in the business world, to work on making a world that exists outside of this realm, that exists here to be seen by everyone.
