Artist Statement for Ahmet Canga

Wooden sculptures carved on pencils by Dr. Ahmet Çanga are perhaps some of the smallest in the world, with dimensions ranging from 0.7x3.0 cm to 0.7x20.0 cm.

The sculptures unite figurative expressions and the subjects, transforming them into subjective interpretations.

Figurative expressions include those of mythology, love and communication. And the material is simply a pencil.

Yes, a pencil… A pencil that turns into a sculpture through neat, detailed patient work.

Engraving many abstract topics of life such as love, depression, bashfulness, innocence and gossip, Dr. Çanga gave life to ordinary pencils throughout his university years.

Eve gives the apple to Adam, for the first time on a pencil…

The talkativeness of a gossip is expressed by a face composed of only mouth and teeth; his/her curiosity is expressed by a keyhole on the head; that a gossip needs no brain to chatter is articulated by an empty head; that s/he would go on gossiping is reflected by the foot on the abdominal region; and that gossiping cannot be attributed to a specific age is expressed by a fit bust symbolizing youth, next to a flabby bust symbolizing oldness… all on a single pencil, the “Gossip”, carved by Dr. Çanga.

Dr. Çanga started to express his topics in oil paintings in 1988, and on clay sculptures in 1998, with the same details and aesthetics as on the pencil sculptures, but with a greater scale.

Dr. Çanga’s career as a plastic surgeon allows him to bring a detailed knowledge of anatomy, to all his works of art. This is combined with abstract creativity, reflecting intelligence and aesthetics.
