Artist Statement for Adjoa Burrowes

As an illustrator, I create original cut paper collages for children's picture books. My work celebrates nature and the simple joy and wonder of childhood. I want the viewer to be delighted by my art and intrigued by it's three-dimensional nature.

I enjoy the physical nature of art making. My formal training was as a Printmaker — creating etchings, lithograhs and silkscreen prints for many years. Now, I paint my papers with watercolor, acrylic and dyes, paying special attention to color and texture. The process of cutting out tiny shapes from paper and pasting them into my compositions is tedious work, but very fulfilling. My palette is very bright and lively. I use "carnival colors" in my work - bright oranges, yellows and reds that evoke energy, movement and life.
