Artist Statement:
Approach and Interest / Metaphor and Meaning
My interest is in the abstraction of nature and the organic form. While nature determine form by function, my inclination lies towards the arbitrary/subjective interpretation to express feelings and emotions.
As such my manipulation of form and colour is not necessarily a derivation of organic/natural specimen studies, but an attempt at conveying the spiritual essence.
I try to imbue my paintings with my own rationalisation of life. My attempt is to portray the different phases in life; triumph, failure, etc., and to bring out the emotions related to them; joy, disappointment, etc.
However, I prefer to explore the more positive emotions. As I consider the act of painting as my attempt to share my experience, I do not wish to use it as a cathartic device to vent negative emotions.
The connotation of life to waves of “ombak”, though overused, is nevertheless truthful in its simplicity. However, I do not believe in the direct metaphor of the flow of the wave as the ebb and tide of life. The interpretation should represent a more holistic view of the process of life.
