Artist Statement for Alan Singer

Over thirty years as a painter, printmaker and writer on art my work has taken on a new depth and weight. I still paint and draw but have added digital tools to my kit. My compositions might start as a pastel drawing, or with a digital pen on a drawing tablet. Watercolor is a medium that still requires great concentration and the right brushes but I frequently go to it when I feel less constrained by time. My abstract paintings have grown out of a language related to science and geometry in a broad sense. When I think of science, I think of the forces of physics, and the patterns of nature. Likewise, when I think of geometry, I consider the role of relationships, and proportions. The visual language I work with has color as a central feature, often with
a very graphic, edgy feel.
