Artist Statement:
Issues of contemporary spirituality drive my artistic vision. Images of church edifices, crosses, and stained glass windows pervade my work, with overtones of sobriety, nostalgia, and brokenness. This body of work sheds a unique light on modern-day spirituality, provoking the viewer to reflect on the increasing influence of culture on religion.
More and more society wants religion to blend into secular culture. But the faithful are to stand out by not accepting the ways of this world. The two clash and this discord is apparent in my pieces. My work is strongly concept-based, and at first glance you might think it is anti-religious. However what you see depicted is culture’s negative effect on religion. Most of the time when artists deal with the topic of religion, especially Christianity, their work critiques and more often degrades it, like Federico Solmi's controversial crucifix from "The Evil Empire" (2007) and Alfred Hrdlicka's work "Religion, Flesh and Power" (2008).
My artwork conveys the bewildered spiritual state of our society today and inspires believers to fully embrace their faith, as well as encourages everyone to better understand those that adhere to a religious faith.
