Artist Statement:
A look back over the years shows that my strongest and most unifying visual expressions are those that address the duality of existence. It is an undercurrent to all my work suggesting there exists barely a breath between inside and out, nest and cage, coming and going, darkness and dawn. Our ancient yearnings to set out on the open road rest comfortably next to our expectations of hearth and home. Often inspiring to me is my own intense and frequently comical struggle to balance living within the compromise of reality, without denying the importance of my dreams of freedom.
I work in a variety of media starting with a basic concept and drawing from stimuli close at home. The subjects are chosen for their strong personal relevancy. Ideas, pulled randomly from memory are joined together seeking a visual harmony, and creating becomes understood as "thought". The works are abstract in composition, realistic in form, and surreal in content. Striving to surpass the limits of art on a pictorial level, I hope to move and satisfy viewers in a heightened way by surprising their expectations, conforming to order, even as I jar it.
