Review of Golden Fleece…Recent works by Alexandra Kruglyak
By James R. Nelson, visual arts critic for The Birmingham News
Sunday, March 5, 2006
Alexandra Kruglyak chose to explore a variety of styles or manners with admirable control and solid technique. From a rendering of a Baroque portrait of a lady to admirable realizations of the nude figure to works that are witty spoofs on other well known works, Kruglyak establishes an attractive and sophisticated vision of things, be they pieces of fruit, cascading flowers or vibrant abstractions.
Kruglyak’s still life paintings show her superb control of illusions. Roses seem to pop off the surface with a reality that has almost everything but the flora perfume. There are several very small works that present portraits of a single piece of fruit with all the dignity and vigor of more complex subject matter. A few works reflect her art studies, such as “Quite Water” which is a take off on Vincent VanGogh’s “Starry Night” and Mme. Adeline with Zizi,” a well corseted lady posed like George Seurat’s “Lady with a Powder Puff.”
Most interesting are her abstractions. Unquestionably influenced by the German school of Abstract Expressionism, Kruglyak creates elegant vortexes of shape and color that explode with energy and wit.
