Artist Statement:
I am inspired by oil paintings of Italian and German masters of 14-16 centuries and by the Russian icon painting of the same period. I feel very close to these art traditions, however I am not attempting to work in this manner.
I live in Prague, one of the most beautiful cities in Europe. Its architecture is a mixture of Gothic, Baroque and Secession style buildings. Its mysterious and even magic atmosphere finds its reflection in my artworks. Therefore the characters like queens, knights, and angels - appear in my paintings quite often.
The figures, which appear in my paintings, are a bit schematic at the beginning but as I work further on a painting they change and take different shapes. The result is sometimes unexpected even for myself. The people in my paintings are often fantastic, magic. These are not specific people whom I know but they are rather some symbols that help me to express my feelings and moods.
When I create a painting, a sculptor in me sometimes wins over a painter. I pay more attention to shapes, draping, and clothes than to colors. In this case, the figures in my paintings become “three-dimensional”, they are ...
