Born in Birkirkara, was educated in arts at St. Joseph Technical School, under Ganni Bonnici, and the Malta Government School of Arts under Carmel Mangion (1967-72). He also followed courses in painting under Prof. Joseph Briffa and history of arts under Fr. Marius Zerafa (1971-73).
Briffa furthered his studies at the Istituto Centrale del Restauro in Rome (1976-77)(1980-81) during this period he also attended an evening classes course at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Rome .He was also awarded a fellowship and followed a course in conservation of mural paintings at (The International Centre for the Study of the Preservation and the Restoration of Cultural Property, ICCROM, Rome (1983).during ICCROM fellowship, his fresco painting was selected to be added for a permanent exhibition at ICCROM lecture room.
Briffa was involved in several important restoration works mostly in churches, and also when he was employed as a restorer of paintings by the Museum Department under the supervision of the former Director Fr. Marius Zerafa.
Briffa’s original paintings include, amongst others, a portrait of Sir Anthony Mamo first President of Malta permanently exhibited at San Anton Palace(1989),Our Lady of Lourdes chapel’s dome at Floriana, property of Cappuchins Fathers.(1993), St. Lawrence altarpiece at the Holy Trinity parish church Marsa (1994), Our Lady of Sorrows chapel’s dome four pendants and three lunette at St. Helen Basilica parish church Birkirkara (1998), St. Francis of Assisi chapel’s dome and four pendants, at Our Lady of Grace Sanctuary parish church Zabbar, (1999). Briffa recently is working on a project for the same parish church of Zabbar.
Briffa had participated in a number of collective exhibitions in private halls and at the National Museum, In April 1988 he participated in an International Art Exhibition held at the Museo del Risorgimento,Rome. In 1995 he held a personal exhibition at the Island International Hotel Qawra. In 1996 his painting was in Christies Sales Rooms, London. In 1996, 1998, and 2000, he participated in the Contemporary Christian Art in Malta, at the Cathedral Museum Mdina. In 1999, he participated in the 2nd Biennale Internazionale Dell’Arte Contemporanea Florence Italy, and one of his works presented for the Biennale at Florence was selected amongst 1500 pieces to be one of 96 prints for its poster.
He is married to Helen nee Sillato and has two sons Christian and Andrea
