Artist Statement for Alice Robrish
|
|
|
The choice of clay as my primary medium seems to come from play in mud, sand and water in the ponds of the undeveloped land that surrounded my childhood home outside of New York City.
In 2004 I moved from Washington DC to Yellow Springs, Ohio which is the home of Glen Helen, a thousand acre nature preserve. Glen Helen, filled with streams, ravines, limestone outcroppings and cliffs, is reminiscent of the woods I played in as a child. My childhood play, the numerous wilderness trips I've made over the years, and now, time spent in The Glen, provide grounding and inspiration for my work.
In my work, I address our dependence on the planet for life. In some of my sculptures, I pair fired clay, a material that survives for millennia, with wood that decays. I am fascinated by what is hidden, what is seen, what changes, and what remains the same.
