Artist Statement:
Uncovering and bringing to the surface what boils beneath creates the tension necessary for a dialog to begin between the idea and the artist and/or the art and the viewer.
Finding anyway to create this tension, gouging, scratching, laying, etc in a painting or sculpture allows for deeper inspection, providing the incredible power of metaphor for the human condition....

| Biggest Artistic Inspiration |
I had an older artist acquaintace that changed how I work and view the art world.
It happened when I was 17 years old. I had submitted a surrealistic painting when most of the artists were submitting flowers or landscapes. My piece was picked up by the judges and taken into the judging room. In the meantime I had been taken under the wing of another artist who worked in ceramics. When the judges returned my work, it had a 3rd place ribbon on it. But when all the other artists came around to check out who won what, the reaction to my piece could have sent me running and hiding for the remainder of my artistic career. Except, my new found artist friend told me something very important. He said I was successful, that it is much better to get a strong reaction than one of no reaction. THAT changed my life. |
