Artist Statement for Allen Lewis

To create is innate to the human spirit. I have been drawn to art earlier then I can remember. As a painter, I see the world constantly from an artist’s point of view. I am always seeking to recognize colors in all I see, from the variations of yellow found in a spring flower to the different hues of blue in a clear morning sky.

As an artist, I have been especially drawn to the human face. You’ll find that most of my work centers around the face. I like the broad ranges of expressions it displays at any give time. I have studied facial anatomy extensively. I have studied the face’s bone structure and muscles, I have learned how they connect and interact. Whenever I look into a person’s face I find myself wondering, “How can I capture their persona on canvas?”

I give close attention to how light falls on and about a subject. I like the way light affects colors. I am also intrigued by the contrast created by shadows. It’s almost as if the light and dark are vying for my attention, with the light dictating where a shadow may or may not fall.

My constant goal as an artist is to bring colors, values, lights, and darks together harmoniously to create a work that leaves a lasting impression on the mind – soul. I want my art to make people want to see more. This challenges me.
