Artist Statement for Allan Revich

I Studied art at the University of Toronto, the Ontario College of Art, and the Jerusalem Printmaking Workshop. I graduated from the University of Toronto in 1979 with a Bachelor of Arts degree and returned to university nearly 25 years later to earn a Master of Education degree from the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education in 2005.

My work has been exhibited in group shows in Toronto, the United States, and Isael, and is currently on exhibit in several online galleries. Examples of my work are in several private and public collections worldwide, including The International Museum of Collage and the Art Gallery of Ontario. My poetry has appeared in several small press publications and a volume of conceptual Haiku has also been published.

I believe that art should ask questions rather than provide answers. What is art? Does art have to be beautiful? Does it have to be meaningful, and if so to whom? In my artwork I explore these and other issues around semiotics, poetics and visual representation. I try to explore borders and boundary issues - looking at the spaces where media meet and where ideas come together.

My work draws on many influences, ranging from the concept drawings of Leonardo da Vinci to the conceptual explorations of artists like Marcel Duchamp, Claude Monet, John Cage, Andy Warhol, Ray Johnson, George Maciunas, and Jenny Holzer. My work is also influenced by social, political, and postmodern theoretical discourse.

For the last several years I have aligned myself closely with Fluxus and Intermedia. I contribute frequently to the Fluxlist and the Fluxlist Blog.
