Artist Statement for Joanna Almasude

What is an "ARTIST?" Artist is defined in the American Heritage Dictionary as follows: [art-ist (artist) n. 1. One who creates works of art, esp. A painter, sculptor, or musician]. This commonly used definition is quite sound, but troublesome, especially in light of the current "art market." Given that painting, sculpture, and music are media (technologies) of expression, it wouldn't make sense to limit “Art” to a specific discipline(s). Furthermore, it is neither the tool nor the discipline that defines “Art."

ART is best defined as the dedication of the worker and the quality of his or her work. Like the artist who saves peoples lives in hospitals, works in a factory making automobiles, or cleans the classrooms after the teachers have left ... my mission is; 1) dedication to my work, 2) the quality of my work and 3) the purpose of my work ... change. I am not interested in following fashion or fad, nor do I want to lull my viewers into escaping from life's daily problems.

My mission at a conceptual level is to question and lead the philosopher, the scientist and the politician to debate and resolve sociopolitical obstacles. Some of my images may be considered anthropological, documenting traditional elements of Moroccan culture that are changing, and will soon be lost. Other images are of a highly political nature, challenging some of the current conditions relating to the question of language and position of the indigenous people (the Mother) as well as my distress at movements towards Western values and culture in Morocco. Though these images are of people with specific concerns, their message is universal. I am committed to produce ART with a timeless quality. The primary theme of the Moroccan series highlights the question of Power, Hope and the Struggle of the Mother in light of the current invasion of Western Modernity, the question of the position of women in general, and the "MOTHER" specifically in modern life.

At a formal level I approach painting as a scientist and philosopher, I am "objective," direct in approach, yet always questioning. Though I do not believe in "truth," I am always striving to find it, capture it -- possibly create it in my technique. I am comfortable with the stylistic classification of my work as "contemporary realism." I choose to shy away from going to photo realism, or impressionism, (both styles I enjoy very much) though either would be easier for me to produce. I prefer to mix realism and impressionism to create my own style style ... it suits my subjects, and carries my concepts further than either style would alone.
