Artist Statement for Ann Lonegan

The combination of abstraction and representation gives these paintings an appearance that is concrete and plausible, yet ambiguous. This series of oils is painted on panels. Each has an enamel like finish and is intimate in scale. Throughout, an object from nature is carefully observed and recorded using a palette selected to evoke a season and reflect the object. These dimensional organic forms are contrasted with the flat geometric rectilinear shapes which float, according to their color intensity, in different planes in space. Manipulated values and perspective create an impossible reality, probing accepted conventions of time, space and our perceptions of what seems real. The harmonious integration of the visual contradictions is the underlying subject of this work.
