Artist Statement for Alpha Shanahan

|
I have been surrounded by women most of my life, having been raised, together with my four sisters, by three selfless women. In addition, I spent six years of my life as a nun. Thus I am most inspired to create 'woman' paintings and illustrations.
Each 'woman' in my work has her own character and personality. Some are named and some are not. A few have handwritten texts incorporated in the painting to convey a very specific message.
Through my 'woman' paintings and illustrations, I wish to offer the world images of 'woman' who is ---
. . . modest and simple,
. . . gentle and caring,
. . . bold and creative,
. . . prayerful and contemplative.
