Artist Statement:
Born and raised in Argentina, Cristina Alvarez Magliano got her first diploma in arts at the age of 15 and became a schoolteacher at her 17th. However, she kept her artistic activities as a hobby along her university studies at the Law School of the University of Buenos Aires and her long and successful career in the field of labor and federal law as a member of the Judiciary Power of her country. In 2003 she retired from her post as a federal circuit court judge to dedicate her efforts to the activity she loves most, which is unconventional marquetry. She developed a different technique for inserting stones and metals into marquetry works, a characteristical distinction of her pieces, as it is the use of deep colors in stained or dyed veneer. She has frequented a lot of different subjects and sizes, which is not common among the few artists that master the double-bevel cutting technique, creating a new and bold aesthetic through her pieces, many of them showing representational subjects against abstract backgrounds.
