Artist Statement for Cris Alvarez Magliano
|
|
|
Born and raised in Argentina, Cristina Alvarez Magliano got her first diploma in arts at the age of 15 and became a schoolteacher at her 17th. However, she kept her artistic activities as a hobby along her university studies at the Law School of the University of Buenos Aires and her long and successful career in the field of labor and federal law as a member of the Judiciary Power of her country. In 2003 she retired from her post as a federal circuit court judge to dedicate her efforts to the activity she loves most, which is unconventional marquetry. She developed a different technique for inserting stones and metals into marquetry works, a characteristical distinction of her pieces, as it is the use of deep colors in stained or dyed veneer. She has frequented a lot of different subjects and sizes, which is not common among the few artists that master the double-bevel cutting technique, creating a new and bold aesthetic through her pieces, many of them showing representational subjects against abstract backgrounds.
Now Alvarez Magliano is living in beautiful British Columbia, in the Harbor City, Nanaimo. She has exhibited her work in many art galleries –solo or group shows- in Buenos Aires and Moreno, Argentina; Caunnes- Minervois, France; Pearl River, NY; San Francisco, CA; Minneapolis, MINN; Vancouver, WA; in the USA; Nanaimo, BC in Canada, and on line in many specialized pages, including her own: www.allmarquetry.com.
