Artist Statement for Al Yoakum

A little about myself:

The medias I focus on are Fused Glass and Enamel on Copper in a three dimensional format. The styles are primitive and abstract in an organic and Bronze Age design. I am partially colorblind but the bold and vibrant colors in glass help overcome this. By the use of glass I hope to give a slice of hope and happiness to others. And maybe, warm their soul.

The fusing of glass technique I use is a two-step process. First, different shapes and colors of glass are placed together in one to three layers to form a geometric shape. The glass is then placed in a kiln and heated between 1300 to 1600 degrees F and cooled over twenty-four hours. The glass has now become one contiguous piece. The second step consists of prepping the piece and placing it over a mold. The mold can be of a single or multi use purpose. The glass and mold are placed in a kiln and heated between 1200 to 1600 degrees F and cooled over twenty-four hours. If the glass is heated or cooled to fast, it will crack and appear to have exploded. Glass has a temperament of it own and the exact outcome will vary making each piece unique. The end result offers a beautiful and heart warming experience that can be shared with others.

Enamel on Copper is similar to Fused Glass. The enamel or ground glass is sifted onto a piece of copper and placed in the kiln that has been heated to between 1450 to 1750 degrees F for approximately two minutes and removed to cool. This is repeated with each color application for the front and back of the piece. The color placement in layers, amount of enamel, heat, and time in the kiln all affect the outcome of the piece. I hand form the copper I use by shearing, shrinking, and hammering. Each project is unique and different. As the enamel is applied to the copper, its organic shape becomes alive with the richness of the glass. It can send you into a magical world and touch your soul.

Fused Glass and Enamel on Copper have brought happiness and joy to civilization for over three thousand years and I feel honored to be a part of this expression of art.
